Protozoan parasite-specific carbohydrate structures

Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 2005
The carbohydrate moieties displayed by pathogenic protozoan parasites exhibit many unusual structural features and their expression is often developmentally regulated. These unique structures suggest a specific relationship between such carbohydrates and parasite pathogenicity.

The protozoan parasites

2008
Transmission of infectious agents by blood transfusion has been an ongoing concern of transfusion medicine for decades. For years, the focus of concern has appropriately been on a variety of viral agents (e.g. HIV, hepatitis viruses, West Nile virus) that are known to pose blood safety risks.

Proteases of Protozoan Parasites

1999
Proteolytic enzymes seem to play important roles in the life cycles of all medically important protozoan parasites, including the organisms that cause malaria, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, amebiasis, toxoplasmosis, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis and trichomoniasis.

The Topoisomerases of Protozoan Parasites

Parasitology Today, 2000
Protozoan parasites are responsible for a wide range of debilitating and fatal diseases that are proving notoriously difficult to treat. Many of the standard chemotherapies in use today are expensive, have toxic side effects and, in some cases have marginal efficacy because of the emergence of drug-resistant parasites.

Parasitic And Mutualistic Protozoans

2000
Abstract Protozoans live in oceans, lakes, streams, soils, and around the roots of plants. They also live in the alimentary canal, bloodstream, liver, lungs, brain, and other organs of animals.. Some protozoans cause serious human illnesses, such as malaria, African sleeping sickness, and Chagas’s disease (Roizman, 1996; Wills, 1996 ...

Mobile genetic elements in protozoan parasites

Journal of Genetics, 2002
Mobile genetic elements, by virtue of their ability to move to new chromosomal locations, are considered important in shaping the evolutionary course of the genome. They are widespread in the biological kingdom. Among the protozoan parasites several types of transposable elements are encountered.

Protozoan Parasitic Infection

Poultry has protozoa that are classified into multiple taxonomic groupings. In poultry, two types of parasites are significant: the coccidia and the mastiogophora (flagellates). Some parasites, which cause coccidiosis, have short, direct life cycles and are therefore preferred, while other parasites that involve intermediate hosts typically do not pose

The cell cycle in protozoan parasites

2000
Research into cell cycle control in protozoan parasites, which are responsible for major public health problems in the developing world, has been hampered by the difficulties in performing classical genetic analysis with these organisms. Nevertheless, in a large part thanks to the data gathered in other eukaryotic systems and to the acquisition of the ...

Drug repurposing for parasitic protozoan diseases

Protozoan parasites are major hazards to human health, society, and the economy, especially in equatorial regions of the globe. Parasitic diseases, including leishmaniasis, malaria, and others, contribute towards majority of morbidity and mortality. Around 1.1 million people die from these diseases annually.
