Reverse oblique intertrochanteric fractures are classified by the AO/OTA as 31A3 and account for 2-23% of all trochanteric fractures. The Gamma 3-Proximal Femoral Nail (GPFN) and the Expendable Proximal Femoral Nail (EPFN) are among the various devises used to treat this fracture.

Biomechanical Evaluation of the Proximal Femoral Nail
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2002In 1997, the proximal femoral nail was introduced for treatment of peritrochanteric femoral fractures. Treatment results show a low complication rate. The most serious complication is cutout of the hip pin and femoral neck screw. Considerable load on the hip pin is thought to facilitate cutout.

The goal of this study was to compare the results of proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA; Synthes, Oberdorf, Switzerland) fixation with those of Gamma nail 3 (GN-3; Stryker, Mahwah, New Jersey) fixation for unstable proximal femoral fractures.

Splitting of the Proximal Femur With a New Femoral Nail
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 2010We present a case of a 19-year-old woman with a closed diaphyseal femur fracture and who had fixation of the fracture using a newer lateral entry nail, which resulted in an intraoperative proximal femur fracture. The patient underwent revision the following day and subsequently returned to regular activity without signs of implant failure or loss of ...

Pitfalls and complications in the use of the proximal femoral nail
Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery, 2004Osteosynthesis with the proximal femoral nail (PFN) features the advantages of high rotational stability of the head-neck fragment, an unreamed implantation technique and the possibility of static or dynamic distal locking. However, the use of the nail is technically ambitious and is accompanied by some risks of error, which can lead to failure of the ...

The purpose of our study was to compare the proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA; Synthes, Paoli, Pennsylvania) with a reconstruction nail (Recon; Zimmer, Warsaw, Indiana) in the treatment of comminuted proximal femoral fractures. Between 2003 and 2010, twenty-three consecutive patients with AO/Orthopaedic Trauma Association 31-A3 ...
