An interpreted language implementation of the Vaganov-Shashkin tree-ring proxy system model

open access: yes, 2019
We describe the implementation of the Vaganov-Shashkin tree-ring growth model (VSM) in MATLAB. VSM, originally written in Fortran, mimics subdaily and daily resolution processes of cambial growth as a function of soil moisture, air temperature, and insolation, with environmental forcing modeled as the principle of limiting factors.

Proxy records from planktonic foraminifera: Pitfalls and perspectives

open access: yes, 2011
There is an urgent need to better quantify proxy records. Current research aims to generate high resolution records that allow for accurate interpretations of past water mass conditions. Accuracy and precision do not necessarily represent true biological

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.

Sum things are not what they seem: Problems with the interpretation and analysis of radiocarbon-date proxies

open access: yes, 2019
Radiocarbon-date proxies are widely used in studies exploring long-term variation in human and environmental phenomena. Examined phenomena include, for example, variation in past human population levels and climate-change-driven sea level fluctuations.

Proxy war. in search of concept's validity.

open access: yes, 2016
Proxy War. In Search of Concept's Validity. Bachelor thesis “Proxy war. In Search of Concept’s Validity” aims to deconstruct “proxy war” concept. By using the theory of conceptual history which is formulated by Reinhart Koselleck it tries to find out ...

An efficient polynomial chaos-based proxy model for history matching and uncertainty quantification of complex geological structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A novel polynomial chaos proxy-based history matching and uncertainty quantification method is presented that can be employed for complex geological structures in inverse problems.

Tumbling Magnetic Microrobots for Targeted In Vivo Drug Delivery in the GI Tract

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
We introduce a microrobot design and integrated system for on‐demand targeted drug release in the gastrointestinal tract. The microrobot has an embedded magnet for actuation with external magnetic fields and is visualized in real time using ultrasound. It has two drug release ports sealed with a thermally sensitive wax. Local heating of the wax using a

Real‐Time Holographic Feedback via Mixed Reality Sensorized Laryngoscope Training System Enhances Pediatric Intubation Training

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
We proposed a Mixed Reality Sensorized Laryngoscope Training System to provide real‐time holographic torque feedback during pediatric endotracheal intubation simulation. Visualization formats are evaluated to reduce tracking error and visual demand.

Two theoretical interpretations of the dissonance between fertility intentions and behaviour [PDF]

open access: yes
In the paper we outline two possible theoretical interpretations for the inconsistency often observed between fertility intentions and fertility behaviour.

Endoplasmic Reticulum Geometry Dictates Neuronal Bursting via Calcium Store Refill Rates and Exposes Selective Neuronal Vulnerability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The ER's continuous tubular network is maintained by ER‐shaping proteins whose mutation or dysregulation contributes to neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we show that ER morphology sets the speed of Ca2+ store replenishment between firing events. Disrupting ER continuity slows intra‐ER Ca2+ redistribution from extracellular refill (SOCE) sites, driving
