Abstract Chapter 6 follows the newly Prussian city of Danzig through turbulence and prosperity. Danzig had been part of Prussia for only fourteen years when Napoleon besieged and took the city in 1807. For seven difficult years, Danzig had become a “free city” overseen by a French governor and exploited for Napoleon’s profit.
