Abstract Aim We investigated the biogeographic pattern of the species‐rich genus Psectrascelis (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) in the Central Andes and the Chilean Atacama Desert as an example for insect evolution in such a geologically and climatically highly dynamic arid region.

Two new species of the genus Psectrascelis Solier (Pimeliinae: Nycteliini) from western Argentina, P. argentina sp. nov. from high mountain range Precordillera in San Juan province and P. telteca sp. nov. from lowlands in Mendoza province, are described and included in the most recent key for the genus.
