Accelerating Materials Discovery: A Review of Machine Learning in X‐Ray Absorption Spectroscopy
This review systematically details how machine learning transforms X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analysis. It covers advanced deep learning architectures for structure‐spectra mapping and inverse tasks, while discussing key challenges like the simulation‐to‐reality gap.

Abstract Irregular observation times are common in longitudinal observational studies and can affect causal inferences. We use data from electronic health records of Kaiser Permanente Washington patients in the United States who initiated an antidepressant medication between 2008 and 2018, with a confirming diagnosis of depression. We are interested in

Opening the Black Box of Sustainable Investing: Examining the Impact of Psychological Distance
ABSTRACT This study examines the effects of psychological distance on investors' reaction to sustainability controversies. Based on two stated choice experiments among 142 German and 136 French student participants, we find evidence that respondents react more strongly to controversies which are perceived as less distant in social, spatial, or ...

Monte Carlo methods for the estimation of value-at-risk and related risk measures [PDF]
Nested Monte Carlo is a computationally expensive exercise. The main contributions we present in this thesis are the formulation of efficient algorithms to perform nested Monte Carlo for the estimation of Value-at-Risk and Expected-Tail-Loss.

Betamethasone concentrations in 20 horses from Japan and Germany following IV, IM, and INJ administration of betamethasone phosphate were analyzed using population pharmacokinetic modeling. For IV administration of 0.04 mg/kg q24 h, IPC and IUC were 0.012 and 0.31 ng/mL, respectively; the IUC approximated the IFHA urine ISL (0.20 ng/mL).

Complex Versus Parsimonious Site‐Based Stochastic Ground Motion Models: Which One Is Better?
ABSTRACT Stochastic ground motion models (GMMs) provide a probabilistic representation of seismic input and are increasingly important for uncertainty quantification (UQ) in earthquake engineering. This study focuses on site‐based stochastic GMMs, which learn the statistical features of selected datasets of seismic records and generate statistically ...

Local Search and the Evolution of World Models
Abstract An open question regarding how people develop their models of the world is how new candidates are generated for consideration out of infinitely many possibilities. We discuss the role that evolutionary mechanisms play in this process. Specifically, we argue that when it comes to developing a global world model, innovation is necessarily ...

A Hardware Generator of Multi-point Distributed Random Numbers for Monte Carlo Simulation [PDF]
Monte Carlo simulation of weak approximations of stochastic differential equations constitutes an intensive computational task. In applications such as finance, for instance, to achieve "real time" execution, as often required, one needs highly efficient

Non-periodic Pseudo-random Numbers Used In Monte Carlo Calculations
The generation of pseudo-random numbers is one of the interesting problems in Monte Carlo simulations, mostly because the common computer generators produce periodic numbers. We used simple pseudo-random numbers generated with the simplest chaotic system,

From Physiology to Bioheat Simulation: A Data‐Driven Framework for Core Temperature Initialization
ABSTRACT Accurate initialization of core body temperature is a critical yet often overlooked component of bioheat transfer models, particularly when such models are applied to heterogeneous populations and real‐world environmental conditions. Conventional bioheat simulations typically rely on fixed or idealized core body temperature values derived from
