Recurrent Pseudocyesis and Hypomania
British Journal of Psychiatry, 1987The case of a young woman presenting with three distinct episodes of pseudocyesis occurring concurrently with annual hypomanic illness is described, and the association between pseudocyesis and affective disorder discussed, with regard both to possible underlying psychopathology and to previously proposed psychoneuroendocrine mechanisms.

While reports of pseudocyesis have been declining, this is still an important condition for physicians to recognize. Symptoms of pregnancy, abdominal distention, galactorrhea, amenorrhea and depression are common findings. Follow-up and counseling are necessary to assure that the patient accepts not being pregnant and the mental health is restored.

Child Stealing and Pseudocyesis
British Journal of Psychiatry, 1982Describing the occurrence of pseudocyesis and its treatment in a 15-year-old girl, Hardwick and Fitzpatrick (1981) pose the question whether there is any association between pseudocyesis and child stealing. They comment that such an association has not so far been reported.
