Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, EarlyView.Rhythmic auditory stimulation has been used across cultures to alter consciousness, yet its neural basis remains unclear. Our review suggests that rhythmic sounds induce absorption and relaxation. We propose that thalamo‐cortical entrainment to low‐frequency rhythms underlie these effects, paralleling mechanisms in psychedelic and psychotic states.
