The Effects of Human Presence, Restraint, and Stressed Neighbors on Corticosterone Levels in Domesticated Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus)

open access: yesZoo Biology, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 37-45, January/February 2026.
Female budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) did not significantly elevate their plasma corticosterone levels in response to human presence at the beginning of the experiment. However, plasma corticosterone was significantly elevated by restraint stress, the return of a neighbor that received restraint stress, and human presence at the end of the ...

Origin and Diversification of the Genera Aratinga, Eupsittula, and Psittacara (Aves: Psittacidae)

open access: yesDiversity
The arrival of psittacine in North America is well known but undefined. It is widely accepted that these birds originated in South America, and it has been suggested that different factors have promoted the biodiversity of birds in Mexico.

Distinct 5′ UTR Requirements for Translation of the Bicistronic X/P mRNA Among Avian Orthobornaviruses

open access: yesMicrobiology and Immunology, Volume 70, Issue 2, Page 80-90, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Orthobornaviruses express X and the phosphoprotein (P) from a bicistronic X/P mRNA, and these proteins regulate polymerase activity. In mammalian orthobornaviruses, the 5′ untranslated region (5′ UTR) of the X/P mRNA controls the translational balance between X and P and thereby promotes efficient replication.

Hindlimb myology of the monk parakeet (Aves, Psittaciformes)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, 2014
ABSTRACTWe studied the hindlimb myology of the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus). Like all parrots, it has zygodactyl feet enabling perching, climbing, hanging, moving easily among trees, and handling food. Muscles were described and weighed, and physiological cross‐sectional area (PCSA) of four flexors and one extensor was calculated.

Forest structure and connectivity drive the functional recovery of seed rain

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
Local forest structure and landscape‐scale connectivity shape distinct but complementary pathways of the functional recovery of seed rain in tropical forests. Structural complexity promotes functionally diverse plant–frugivore interactions locally, while connectivity facilitates the arrival of late‐successional seeds from external sources.

Networks of global bird invasion altered by regional trade ban [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Wildlife trade is a major pathway for introduction of invasive species worldwide. However, how exactly wildlife trade influences invasion risk, beyond the transportation of individuals to novel areas, remains unknown.

Unruffling the global feather trade: a comparative analysis of CITES and LEMIS records of feathers and bird skins

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, January 2026.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, bird feathers (class: Aves) were harvested from wild populations and sold globally in enormous quantities to meet the rising demand of the fashion industry. Although many laws now prevent similar widescale harvest, there is a paucity of studies on the trade that has continued to occur since the 20th century.
