Psittacine Restraint in the Examination Room
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Exotic Animal Practice, 2001This article suggests that there is a high probability of connections between emotional and physical health in animals. Many avian veterinarians are putting these ideas into practice. Recently, several veterinary schools have invited speakers to address their students about these ideas, suggesting a positive change in attitude (Irene Pepperburg ...

Mycobacteriosis in Psittacines: A Potential for Zoonotic Disease?
Journal of Comparative Pathology, 2012Introduction. Mycobacterium spp. is still a problem, especially in ornamental fowl and pet birds and, for underlying the relevance of this infection in the latter, the authors report a retrospective study on mycobacteriosis in 123 psittacines.Materials and methods: These cases were analyzed by means of gross examination, histopathology (haematoxylin ...

The Cornell veterinarian, 1981
Two cases of tuberculosis in psittacine birds were reported and the literature reviewed. One case was in a parakeet and this species was reported to be resistant to mycobacterial infection. No other case of parakeet tuberculosis was found in the literature. The other case was in a parrot.

Coxiella-like Infection in Psittacines and a Toucan
Avian Diseases Digest, 2008Seven psittacine birds and a toucan (Ramphastos toco) were diagnosed as infected with Coxiella-like bacteria, based on polymerase chain reaction and bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence obtained from each bird's liver tissue. Most of the birds exhibited lethargy and weakness for several days prior to death.

Inclusion bodies and hepatopathies in psittacines
Avian Pathology, 1987Intranuclear inclusion bodies in hepatic cells of seven Peach-faced Lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis), two Black-masked Love birds (A. personata) and two galahs (Cacatua roseicapilla) were examined electron microscopically. Thin sections were prepared from formalin-fixed Epon-embedded tissue or from haematoxylin and eosin stained sections that were ...

Disorders of the Psittacine Gastrointestinal Tract
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Exotic Animal Practice, 2005In birds, the oropharynx is comprised of the oral cavity and the pharynx [1]. Unlike mammals, there is no distinct division between the two regions [1]. It is lined by stratified squamous epithelium [2]. In place of a soft palate, birds have a median longitudinal fissure called a choana, which links the oral cavity to the nasal cavity [1].

Artificial incubation is a widespread practice in intensive avicultural establishments. It is used primarily as a means of increasing production, both by increasing the number of eggs laid per hen and by minimizing the spread of disease. As more and more aviculturists turn to artificial incubation to increase production, veterinarians will increasingly

Sevoflurane anesthesia in psittacines.
Journal of zoo and wildlife medicine : official publication of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, 1999Duration of anesthesia onset (time to intubation) and recovery (time to extubation, sternal and standing) and quality of recovery were compared for sevoflurane and isoflurane in 10 adult psittacines. Both agents were initially administered at an equal volume percentage (2%) rather than at equal minimum alveolar concentrations (MACs), therefore the ...
