open access: yesJournal of Biological Researches, 2012
On April and September 2006, preliminary study to know the distribution, population status and habitat of the Javan moustached parakeets (Psittacula alexandri alexandri Linnaeus 1758) were conducted in the Baluran and Alas Purwo National Parks (East ...

Socio‐Economic Status and Non‐Native Species Drive Bird Ecosystem Service Provision in Urban Areas

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 7, July 2025.
Birds bring important benefits to people, like pest control and aesthetic enjoyment. We studied birds in cities across Spain and Portugal to see how income levels affect the benefits people get from nature. We found that higher income areas tended to have more bird species but, surprisingly, fewer of these benefits, while places with non‐native birds ...

Sighting of Red-breasted Parakeet Psittacula alexandri (Linnaeus, 1758) (Psittaciformes: Psittaculidae) from Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2016
Red-breasted Parakeet is one among the most widespread parakeets of the world.  The ‘Near Threatened’ bird has been in pet trade for long and is already known as a feral bird from major cities in India.

Integrating intraspecific trait variability in functional diversity: An overview of methods and a guide for ecologists

open access: yesEcological Monographs, Volume 95, Issue 2, May 2025.
Abstract Variability in traits within species (intraspecific trait variability; ITV) has attracted increased interest in functional ecology, as it can profoundly influence the detection of functional trait patterns, calculations of functional diversity (FD), and assessments of ecosystem functioning. This interest stems from the recognition that species

FOGS: A SNPSTR Marker Database to Combat Wildlife Trafficking and a Cell Culture Bank for Ex‐Situ Conservation

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 4, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Illegal wildlife trade is a growing problem internationally. Poaching of animals not only leads to the extinction of populations and species but also has serious consequences for ecosystems and economies. This study introduces a molecular marker system that authorities can use to detect and substantiate wildlife trafficking.

The Role of Two Tyrosinase‐Like Glycoenzymes in Defining the Final Hue of Parrot Plumage

open access: yesPigment Cell &Melanoma Research, Volume 38, Issue 3, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Recent advances in avian melanogenesis have pinpointed multiple genetic loci associated with color polymorphisms, predominantly in the plumage of chickens, quails, and pigeons. However, the genetic basis of melaninization in parrot plumage remains elusive.

Estimated and in vivo measurements of bite force demonstrate exceptionally large bite forces in parrots (Psittaciformes)

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 246, Issue 2, Page 299-315, February 2025.
Bite force in parrots has been explored using data from muscle masses. The values were validated by comparison with data for bite force collected from live parrots. The parrot's reputation for a strong bite force is well founded. Abstract Jaw morphology and function determine the range of dietary items that an organism can consume.

BREEDING STATUS AND NEST CHARACTERISTICS OF ROSERINGED (PSITTACULA KRAMERI) AND ALEXANDRINE PARAKEETS (PSITTACULA EUPATRIA) IN ISTANBUL’S CITY PARKS

open access: yesApplied Ecology and Environmental Research, 2019
Invasive non-native parakeet populations are increasing throughout Europe with proved negative impact on native fauna and Turkey is no exception. Rose-ringed and Alexandrine parakeets have established populations in Turkey's large cities but even basic distribution, abundance and breeding behaviour information is missing. This study aims at determining
