The Role of Two Tyrosinase‐Like Glycoenzymes in Defining the Final Hue of Parrot Plumage

open access: yesPigment Cell &Melanoma Research, Volume 38, Issue 3, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Recent advances in avian melanogenesis have pinpointed multiple genetic loci associated with color polymorphisms, predominantly in the plumage of chickens, quails, and pigeons. However, the genetic basis of melaninization in parrot plumage remains elusive.

BREEDING STATUS AND NEST CHARACTERISTICS OF ROSERINGED (PSITTACULA KRAMERI) AND ALEXANDRINE PARAKEETS (PSITTACULA EUPATRIA) IN ISTANBUL’S CITY PARKS

open access: yesApplied Ecology and Environmental Research, 2019
Invasive non-native parakeet populations are increasing throughout Europe with proved negative impact on native fauna and Turkey is no exception. Rose-ringed and Alexandrine parakeets have established populations in Turkey's large cities but even basic distribution, abundance and breeding behaviour information is missing. This study aims at determining

Estimated and in vivo measurements of bite force demonstrate exceptionally large bite forces in parrots (Psittaciformes)

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 246, Issue 2, Page 299-315, February 2025.
Bite force in parrots has been explored using data from muscle masses. The values were validated by comparison with data for bite force collected from live parrots. The parrot's reputation for a strong bite force is well founded. Abstract Jaw morphology and function determine the range of dietary items that an organism can consume.

Genomic Introgression Between Critically Endangered and Stable Species of Darwin's Tree Finches on the Galapagos Islands

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 18, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Natural hybridisation among rare or endangered species and stable congenerics is increasingly topical for the conservation of species‐level diversity under anthropogenic impacts. Evidence for beneficial genes being introgressed into or selected for in hybrids raises concurrent questions about its evolutionary significance.
