Using Psychoacoustic Models for Sound Analysis in Music

Proceedings of the 8th Annual Meeting of the Forum for Information Retrieval Evaluation, 2016
Overall sound perception of a song is an important attribute of music. Several psychoacoustic models have been studied to extract perceptual sound qualities from audio signals. By means of listening tests, we investigate whether these sound models successfully reflect (inter-)subjective perception of sound resemblance in music.

Reducing sibilants in recorded speech using psychoacoustic models

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998
Sibilants are a known problem in speech recording. Even though they can often be decreased by a different placement of the microphones, there still is the necessity for methods that reduce these artifacts. Therefore new investigations on sibilants in German, English, Spanish, and French have been made to describe their properties in time and frequency ...

Warped DFT as the basis for psychoacoustic model

2004 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2004
We consider the warped DFT as an alternative basis for psychoacoustic models. The appropriate construction of the transform is approached, aiming for precise critical band power analysis. It is shown that sufficient spectral resolution can be obtained for sample block lengths several times shorter than the 1024 or 2048 commonly used in the FFT based ...

Speech recognition enhancement by psychoacoustic modeled noise suppression

2004 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) (IEEE Cat. No.04TH8763), 2005
This paper proposes a spectral subtraction based speech enhancement algorithm that improves computer based speech recognition. Speech recognition can not be improved by traditional spectral subtraction techniques because of the associated artifacts, such as musical noise.

Optimization of Masking Expansion Algorithm in Psychoacoustic Models

2011 2nd International Symposium on Intelligence Information Processing and Trusted Computing, 2011
MPEG-4 AAC audio coding is the most widely used audio coding at present, but the MPEG-4 AAC audio coding standard has high complexity, long time delay and huge computation, what's more, it is not beneficial for real-time applications. Psychoacoustic model is the core part of the audio encoder, so huge computation also exists.

The Improvement of Wavelet Packet for Psychoacoustic Model

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
Compared with common psychoacoustic model, this article uses wavelet packet decomposition to decompose a signal. This method improves the situation of insufficient time-frequency resolution which the uniform spectrum analysis causes. In addition, frequency division by wavelet packet decomposition is much closer to human’s critical band than the way ...

PEAQ-based psychoacoustic model for perceptual audio coder

2006 8th International Conference Advanced Communication Technology, 2006
For the purpose of improving the coding efficiency, this paper attempts to combine psychoacoustic model for perceptual evaluation of audio quality in BS.1387 with perceptual audio coder. The principle of this new psychoacoustic model is analyzed in theory, and corresponding improvements are proposed to make it be effectively applied to actual audio ...

A psychoacoustic model for the noise masking of plosive bursts

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1997
A model for predicting the masked thresholds of the voiceless plosive bursts /k,t,p/ in background noise is proposed. Because plosive bursts are brief, are generated by a noise source, and have different spectral characteristics, the modeling approach accounts for duration, center frequency, and signal bandwidth.

Incorporating a Psychoacoustical Model in Frequency Domain Speech Enhancement

IEEE Signal Processing Letters, 2004
A frequency domain optimal linear estimator is proposed which incorporates the masking properties of the human auditory system to make the residual noise distortion inaudible. The use of wavelet-thresholded multitaper spectra is also proposed for frequency-domain speech enhancement methods as an alternative to the traditional fast Fourier transform ...
