Urgency is a Non-monotonic Function of Pulse Rate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Magnitude estimation was used to assess the experience of urgency in pulse-train stimuli (pulsed white noise) ranging from 3.13 to 200 Hz. At low pulse rates, pulses were easily resolved.

Concert Hall Sound Clarity: A Comparison of Auditory Judgments and Objective Measures

open access: yesArchives of Acoustics, 2013
The purpose of the study was to compare auditory judgments of sound clarity of music examples recorded in a concert hall with predictions of clarity made from the impulse response signal recorded in the same hall.

Fantastic squeaks and where to find them: producing and analysing audible acoustics from leipäjuusto

open access: yesCurrent Directions in Biomedical Engineering
Chewing not only converts food chunks to digestible proportions, it also conveys audible acoustics resulting in a perception on the type and condition of the food being eaten.

Modelling the sound envelope auditory processing using the non-negative-impulse-response modulation filters concept. Part I. Initial simulations

open access: yesArchives of Acoustics, 2014
This article concerns with a new model of the sound envelope processing in the auditory system. The so-called non-negative-impulse-response (NNIR) modulation filters concept argues that if any form of the acoustic signal envelope filtering took place in ...

Breaking a lance for the psychoacoustics in phoniatrics

open access: yesArchives of Acoustics, 2002
Drawbacks of the acoustical as well as the perceptual voice analysis are discussed. The psychoacoustics is proposed as a new framework for a way out of the dilemma of the traditional voice analysis methods.

Modulation masking phenomenon for masking signals of different spectral and statistical properties

open access: yesArchives of Acoustics, 2014
Modulation masking effect for modulation maskers of different spectral and statistical properties was investigated in this study. Three noisebands centred at 16 Hz were used as modulation maskers, namely: 1) 32-Hz wide Gaussian noise (GN 32 Hz); 2) 32 ...

Virtual acoustics displays [PDF]

open access: yes
The real time acoustic display capabilities are described which were developed for the Virtual Environment Workstation (VIEW) Project at NASA-Ames. The acoustic display is capable of generating localized acoustic cues in real time over headphones.

A Perception-Based Method for the Noise Control of Construction Machines

open access: yesArchives of Acoustics, 2013
During operation, construction machines generate high noise levels which can adversely affect the health and the job performance of operators. The noise control techniques currently applied to reduce the noise transmitted into the operator cab are all ...
