Defense Mechanisms and Psychological Adjustment in Childhood
The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 2003The association between maturity of defense use and psychological functioning was assessed in a group of 95 elementary school children. Defense mechanisms were measured using a valid and reliable storytelling task, and psychological adjustment was assessed through a combination of parent and self-report questionnaires.

Comparison of Three Psychological Defense Mechanism Questionnaires
Journal of Personality Assessment, 1981The Defense Mechanisms Inventory (DMI), the Coping Operations Preference Enquiry (COPE), and the scales developed by Joffe and Naditch (J&N) were compared using multitrait-multimethod logic. Convergent validity was tow as measures of the same defense were not highly correlated across instruments.

Participants assigned to one of three Piagetian cognitive stages, listened to vignettes depicting defensive behaviors of various degrees of logical and structural complexity.
