Interference of Pteridium arachnoideum (Kaulf.) Maxon. (Dennstaedtiaceae) on the establishment of rainforest trees [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2010
In order to identify the effect of P. arachnoideum, we studied 11 native tree species commonly used in reforestation projects. Bioassays were conducted in laboratory to evaluate the effect of bracken leachate on the germination and morphology of seedlings. Juveniles of some of these species were planted in two adjacent but contrasting areas in relation

Worldwide relationships in the fern genus Pteridium (bracken) based on nuclear genome markers. [PDF]

open access: yesAm J Bot, 2019
Premise Spore‐bearing plants are capable of dispersing very long distances. However, it is not known if gene flow can prevent genetic divergence in widely distributed taxa. Here we address this issue, and examine systematic relationships at a global geographic scale for the fern genus Pteridium.

Kinetics of the Natural Evolution of Hydrogen Cyanide in Plants in Neotropical Pteridium arachnoideum and its Ecological Significance [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Ecology, 2005
The time-dependent natural release of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) was studied quantitatively using young croziers of the neotropical bracken fern Pteridium arachnoideum. HCN production was quantified in crushed tissue using a flow reactor at 30.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C. Released HCN was carried into appropriate traps with a moist air flow.

Leaf litter arthropod responses to tropical forest restoration. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2016
Soil and litter arthropods represent a large proportion of tropical biodiversity and perform important ecosystem functions, but little is known about the efficacy of different tropical forest restoration strategies in facilitating their recovery in degraded habitats.

Bovine upper alimentary squamous cell carcinoma associated with bracken fern poisoning: Clinical-pathological aspects and etiopathogenesis of 100 cases. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Upper digestive tract (UDT) cancer is rare in cattle, however in Southern Brazil, the UDT squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are relatively common and have been associated with bracken fern consumption and the presence of papillomas.

Who will win where and why? An ecophysiological dissection of the competition between a tropical pasture grass and the invasive weed Bracken over an elevation range of 1000 m in the tropical Andes. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
In tropical agriculture, the vigorously growing Bracken fern causes severe problems by invading pastures and out-competing the common pasture grasses. Due to infestation by that weed, pastures are abandoned after a few years, and as a fatal consequence ...

A comparative study of resource allocation in Pteridium in different Brazilian ecosystems and its relationship with European studies [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2014
Pteridium is a cosmopolitan genus that acts as an invasive species in many parts of the world. Most research on this genus has occurred in Europe, and there is a lack of data on it from South America, in spite of causing considerable conservation ...
