Pelvic morphology and body size in relation to the preauricular sulcus: Evidence from medieval to modern Iberia

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The preauricular sulcus has long been debated as a pelvic feature variably attributed to obstetric stress, ligamentous traction, and broader biomechanical processes. To clarify its determinants, we analyzed 409 adult individuals from three archeological and one early modern skeletal collection from the Iberian Peninsula, integrating graded ...

A persistent case of tuberculosis of the pubic symphysis and pubic bone [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ Case Reports, 2014
A case of a patient suffering from tuberculosis of the pubic symphysis and pubic bone is presented. There were no symptoms other than pain in the right groin area for 12 months. An X-ray of the pelvis showed an osteodestructive lesion of the pubic bone, and an MRI revealed an abscess formation of the pubic symphysis.

Historical birth records from 1896 to 1944 from the Basel maternity hospital, Switzerland, reveal significant obstetric selection pressures

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality have declined dramatically during the last century. Historical data are therefore important sources to study the evolutionary selection pressures related to childbirth and how they have fluctuated over time.

Open reduction technique for overlapping and locked pubic symphysis

open access: yes, 2012
A locked pubic symphysis can occur following a lateral compression injury of the pelvic ring when one pubic bone becomes entrapped behind the contralateral pubis or obturator foramen, In selecting the treatment modality, it is important to know the ...

Spontaneous Septic Arthritis of Pubic Symphysis in an Elite Athlete [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Septic arthritis of the pubic symphysis is a potentially severe disease. Athletes are at risk of this form of spontaneous arthritis, as inflammation of the pubic bone due to muscular stress is relatively common.

Humans are not unique: difficult birth is common in placental mammals

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Human childbirth is widely presumed to be uniquely difficult and dangerous compared to birth in other mammals. Tight fetopelvic proportions can result in obstructed labour and contribute to high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. Ideas summarised under the ‘obstetrical dilemma’ have contributed to this assumption by explaining difficult

Autonomic Plexuses of the Female Sexual Organs Travel Within Pubocervical and Rectovaginal [Endopelvic] Fascia: A Rationale for ‘Nerve‐Aware’ Vaginal Prolapse Repair

open access: yesClinical Anatomy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The connective tissue support of female pelvic viscera—endopelvic fascia—has been studied in fetal and immunohistochemical models to demonstrate its relationship with the autonomic nerves of the female pelvis. Due to a paucity of literature examining the gross anatomical relationships between endopelvic fascia and autonomic nerves in adult ...
