Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Stakeholder involvement in systematic reviews: a protocol for a systematic review of methods, outcomes and effects

open access: yesResearch Involvement and Engagement, 2017
Plain English Summary Researchers are expected to actively involve stakeholders (including patients, the public, health professionals, and others) in their research. Although researchers increasingly recognise that this is good practice, there is limited

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

Can resources moderate the impact of levels of frailty on adverse outcomes among (pre-) frail older people? A longitudinal study

open access: yesBMC Geriatrics, 2017
Background Higher levels of frailty result in higher risks of adverse frailty outcomes such as hospitalisation and mortality. There are, however, indications that more factors than solely frailty play a role in the development of these outcomes.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Implementation of a Patient Reported Experience Measure in a Dutch disability care organisation: a qualitative study

open access: yesJournal of Patient-Reported Outcomes, 2020
Background Patient Reported Experience Measures are promoted to be used as an integrated measurement approach in which outcomes are used to improve individual care (micro level), organisational quality (meso level) and external justification (macro level)

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Promoting the Implementation of Co‐Produced Cochrane Evidence: An Exploratory Study of Improving Partnering With Consumers

open access: yesCochrane Evidence Synthesis and Methods
Introduction Co‐production of evidence syntheses has the potential to facilitate translation of research findings into policy and practice. However, few studies have explored the process of implementing co‐produced evidence.

What Lies Beneath? The Role of Community Engagement in Translating COVID-19 Research Findings to Policy-Makers [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Health Policy and Management
Background  Community engagement is key to developing local and context-specific strategies for the prevention and control of COVID-19. However, expedited research design and approval in the early days of the pandemic may have limited the opportunities ...
