Are the microcyclic rust species Puccinia melampodii and Puccinia xanthii conspecific?
Mycological Research, 2009The taxonomic relationship between two microcyclic rust species, Puccinia melampodii and Puccinia xanthii, recorded from a number of Asteraceae hosts, was explored by comparing teliospore morphology, host specificity and sequence data. Teliospore morphology varied between and within individual rust accessions but, in general, teliospores of P.

The teliospores of Puccinia ruelliae germinate readily at room temperature (25 2 C) without a rest period. The nuclear behavior in the basidium and basidiospore was studied under the light microscope. The diploid nucleus divides meiotically in the basidium showing leptotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis stages.

On Puccinia magnusiana Körn and Puccinia phragmitis
1967“It was suggested by Professor J. A. MacDonald that a study be made of problems related to the life cycles of the rusts Puccinia magnusiana Körnicke and P. phragmitis (Schum.) Körnicke. Initial observations in the field led to investigations on the respective host ranges of the two species and on the factors governing survival and germination of their ...
