Cryptic diversity and significant cophylogenetic signal detected by DNA barcoding the rust fungi (Pucciniaceae) of Cyperaceae–Juncaceae [PDF]
AbstractPlants play important roles as habitat and food for a tremendous diversity of specialist animals and fungi. The disappearance of any plant species can lead to extinction cascades of its associated biota. In consequence, documenting the diversity and specificity of plant‐associated organisms is of high practical relevance in biodiversity ...

About 300 species of Puccinia on Poaceae have been reported globally. However, these species can be difficult to identify because of morphological similarities and difficulties of host plant identifications. The presence of many cryptic species is also suspected. Based on about 150 specimens on Poaceae and about 50 related specimens of spermogonial and

Puccinia pelargonii-zonalis (Uredinales: Pucciniaceae), an addition to the rust flora of Canada
Puccinia pelargonii-zonalis is reported for the first time in Canada. It has occurred on cultivated geraniums (Pelargonium × hortorum) in both greenhouses and gardens in three provinces.

The rust fungus Aecidium macowanianum Thüm. occurring on Conyza species (Asteraceae), is transferred to the genus Endophyllum Lév., as the new combination Endophyllum macowanianum (Thüm.) A.R. Wood. This species should not be confused with the similarly named E. macowanii Pole Evans occurring on Rhamnus prinoides L'Hér. (Rhamnaceae).

The plant Euphorbia cyparissias is commonly infected by rust fungi of the species complex Uromyces pisi. When infected, E. cyparissias is unable to flower, but instead is induced by the fungus to form pseudoflowers. Pseudoflowers are rosettes of yellow leaves upon which the fungus presents its gametes in a sweet-smelling fungal nectar.

The two rust genera with the largest number of species are Puccinia Pers. ex Pers. and Uromyces (Link) Unger in the family Pucciniaceae (Uredinales). The hosts of these pathogens include representatives from almost all major angiosperm orders. Despite their ecological and economic importance, the status of Puccinia and Uromyces as distinct genera has ...

The alien forb Campuloclinium macrocephalum (Less.) DC. (Asteraceae, pompom weed) invades disturbed rangelands in South Africa. After >40 years of naturalisation, infestations around Pretoria were severely damaged in 2006 by the biotrophic rust Puccinia eupatorii Dietel (Pucciniaceae).
