An extreme wave event in Timanfaya National Park: Possible first geological evidence of the 1755 Lisbon tsunami in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 49, Issue 13, Page 4133-4153, October 2024.
Two extreme wave event deposits of boulders have been located on a coastal platform formed by lavas from the 1730‐36 Timanfaya eruption in Lanzarote Island. The modelling of wave heights and tsunami heights required to mobilise these blocks shows that a tsunami was necessary to accumulate the boulders into ridges.

Niche selection in bacterioplankton: A study of taxonomic composition and single‐cell characteristics in an acidic reservoir

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 4, August 2024.
The discrimination of six microbial potential niches in the water column of an acid mine drainage impacted reservoir in space and time, based on a set of 10 environmental variables, occurred simultaneously at the level of taxonomic composition, and at the level of abundance and single cell characteristics of the bacterioplankton communities.

Analysis of tropical nights in Spain (1970–2023): Minimum temperatures as an indicator of climate change

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 44, Issue 9, Page 3006-3027, July 2024.
The paper finds that there has been a considerable increase in the frequency of tropical nights throughout Spain. In addition to occurring more frequently, they tend to be more intense, to appear in more months of the year—and not only in summer—to be more consecutive and to be accompanied by high relative humidity in some areas.

Response of phytoplankton communities to the onset of the 2020 summer marine heatwave in the Drake Passage and Antarctic Peninsula [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences
Extreme warming events are increasingly more intense and frequent in the global ocean. These events are predicted to drive profound and widespread effects on marine ecosystems, yet their impact on phytoplankton, the base of the marine food web, is still ...

Apex predators can structure ecosystems through trophic cascades: Linking the frugivorous behaviour and seed dispersal patterns of mesocarnivores

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 6, Page 1407-1419, June 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Current global change scenarios demand knowledge on how anthropogenic impacts affect ecosystem functioning through changes in food web structure. Frugivorous mesocarnivores are a key link in trophic cascades because, while their abundance and behaviour are usually ...

Exploring the interplay of frailty, physical function, physical activity, nutritional status, and their association with quality of life and depressive symptoms in older adults with the frailty phenotype

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, Volume 39, Issue 3, March 2024.
Abstract Objective This study aimed to explore the interplay between frailty, physical function, physical activity, nutritional status, and their impact on the quality of life and depressive status in older adults with frailty. Methods A cross‐sectional study involving 235 pre‐frail/frail older adults residing in Spanish communities was conducted ...
