All physicians, regardless of their types of practice, are seeing more patients with various forms of chronic lung disease. Pulmonary symptoms may be the primary complaint, or they may become apparent during another illness or after an operation. Pulmonary-function tests offer the means of elucidating the type of physiological impairment present ...

To the Editor:— The article "Pulmonary-Function Tests" which appeared inThe Journal( 206 :2302, 1968) contains the following statement: "The level of arterial Pco 2 is governed solely by the alveolar ventilation. Elevated Pco 2 means alveolar hypoventilation, and reduced Pco 2 , alveolar hyperventilation." Such a statement ignores the ventilation to ...

The advantages and limitations of pulmonary function tests are described. A short description of the methods of investigation of the processes involved in respiration is given, viz., the investigation of ventilation, diffusion, pulmonary capillary perfusion and the mechanics of breathing.

Structural changes in the lungs elicit changes in pulmonary function. In most diffuse lung diseases, respiratory symptoms generally develop insidiously because of alterations of the elastic and/or the flow-resistive properties of the lungs. These symptoms occur concurrently with disturbances of gas exchange.

Spirometry is a fundamental test in the diagnosis of lung disease in children, including preschool children. It measures the amount (volume) and speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled by the patient. The FVC (forced vital capacity) maneuver is the total amount of air exhaled forcefully following a maximal inhalation, and it is usually the ...

Pulmonary function test is an important method to check the respiratory diseases. The aims of pulmonary function test include: (a) judgment whether the respiratory symptoms such as dyspnea, cough and cyanosis are caused by respiratory diseases; (b) management and monitoring of severity, progression and therapeutic reaction of the established ...

Infant pulmonary function testing
Current Opinion in Pediatrics, 2003Pulmonary function tests in infants have been used for many years, but they have been largely relegated to specialized centers and research purposes. More recently, development of commercial equipment and newer techniques has allowed for more broad use and application of these tests.

Pulmonary Function Testing in Horses
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Large Animal Practice, 1979Pulmonary function tests in horses are in the early stages of development and there will be a limit in the range of tests available since those requiring patient cooperation cannot be conducted in animals. Some tests such as blood gas analysis, A-aDo2 and delta Ppl measurements could presently be used to a greater extent under field conditions.

Pulmonary function tests provide quantitative assessment of physiological properties in respiratory system including the lungs and chest wall. Spirometry is the first step as a screening and diagnostic test to investigate the existence and severity of obstructive or restrictive ventilatory disorders. Second is the measurement of lung volumes.

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) refer to a panel of tests including spirometry, measurement of lung volumes, and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO). We first review the basic types of pulmonary disorders (obstructive versus restrictive), and then discuss the main types of PFTs.
