Structural changes in the lungs elicit changes in pulmonary function. In most diffuse lung diseases, respiratory symptoms generally develop insidiously because of alterations of the elastic and/or the flow-resistive properties of the lungs. These symptoms occur concurrently with disturbances of gas exchange.
