Television by Pulse Code Modulation*

Bell System Technical Journal, 1951
Transmission by pulse code modulation presents inviting possibilities in the field of television in that information may be relayed by many repeater stations without deterioration. In a PCM system, the informal ion signal is periodically sampled and its instantaneous amplitude described by a group of pulses according to a pec-set code.

Telephony by Pulse Code Modulation*

Bell System Technical Journal, 1947
An experiment in transmitting speech by Pulse Code Modulation, or PCM, is described in this paper. Each sample amplitude of a pulse amplitude modulation or PAM signal is transmitted by a code group of ON-OFF pulses. 2n amplitude values can be represented by an n-digit binary number code. For a nominal 4 kc.

Pulse code modulation

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1947
A radically new modulation technique for multichannel telephony has been developed which involves the conversion of speech waves into coded pulses. An 8-channel system employing pulse code modulation (PCM) and embodying these principles was produced. The method appears to have exceptional possibilities from the standpoint of freedom from interference ...

Adaptive Companded Pulse Code Modulation

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1983
In this paper, a novel quantization scheme-adaptive companded pulse code modulation (ACPCM)-is proposed. It is shown that, for fine quantization of analog signals, ACPCM will outperform the widely used PCM and DPCM in the sense of minimizing the meansquared quantizing error. For autoregressive (AR)signals, ACPCM is shown to reduce to DPCM.

Pulse Code Modulation

1985
The term pulse code modulation (PCM) refers to the use of a specific set of rules for transforming a waveform into a stream of digits, and vice versa. To clarify the concept, however, the first point to be made is that PCM is coding, but it is not necessarily the modulation of the carrier.

Pulse-code modulation.

2023
This thesis describes work done on the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Tasmania from April 1959 until March 1960 under the supervision of Professor G.H. Newstead. At that time the Department was concerned with providing equipment for telemetry of very low frequency seismic data from remote stations in Tasmania.

Differential pulse-code modulation

International Journal of Electronics, 1979
In this paper an analytical study of the double differential technique in PCM systems for speech signals has been made. It is shown that this double differential technique increases the channel capacity because of a reduction in magnitude of the difference signal and a minimization of the error power by quantization of a suitably chosen difference ...

Pulse-Code Modulation Systems

Proceedings of the IRE, 1953
Following a review of the principles of pulsed transmission of information, the method of pulse code modulation (p.c.m.) is discussed. Two different experimental systems for performing this function are described.
