Superluminal optical pulse propagation in nonlinear coherent media [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The propagation of light-pulse with negative group-velocity in a nonlinear medium is studied theoretically. We show that the necessary conditions for these effects to be observable are realized in a three-level $\Lambda$-system interacting with a linearly polarized laser beam in the presence of a static magnetic field.

Distinct stick-slip modes in adhesive polymer interfaces [PDF]

open access: yesWear 376, 1271-1278, 2017, 2017
Stick-slip, manifest as intermittent tangential motion between two solids, is a well-known friction instability that occurs in a number of natural and engineering systems. In the context of adhesive polymer interfaces, this phenomenon has often been solely associated with Schallamach waves, which are termed slow waves due to their low propagation ...

Novel Methods for Pulse Wave Velocity Measurement [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical and Biological Engineering, 2015
The great incidence of cardiovascular (CV) diseases in the world spurs the search for new solutions to enable an early detection of pathological processes and provides more precise diagnosis based in multi-parameters assessment. The pulse wave velocity (PWV) is considered one of the most important clinical parameters for evaluate the CV risk, vascular ...

Numerical Modeling of Pulse Wave Propagation in a Stenosed Artery using Two-Way Coupled Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
As the heart beats, it creates fluctuation in blood pressure leading to a pulse wave that propagates by displacing the arterial wall. These waves travel through the arterial tree and carry information about the medium that they propagate through as well as information of the geometry of the arterial tree.

Estimated pulse wave velocity and cardiovascular events in Chinese

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cardiology. Hypertension, 2020
The estimated pulse-wave velocity (ePWV) as measure for arterial wall stiffness is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVDs) and all-cause death in Western populations.

Pulmonary pulse wave velocity as assessed with velocity-encoded MRI [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, 2012
Pulmonary pulse wave velocity has proven to be an excellent indicator of pulmonary vascular wall stiffness. In this study a novel MRI method was evaluated, showing rapid assessment of pulmonary pulse wave velocity with excellent repeatability and observer reproducibility.

A Comparative Study of Brachial–Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity and Heart–Finger Pulse Wave Velocity in Korean Adults

open access: yesSensors, 2020
Arterial stiffness is considered an index of vascular aging. The brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) method is widely used because of its proven effectiveness; and the pulse wave velocity measurement method using both electrocardiogram (ECG) and ...

Pulse Wave Velocity Predicts Response to Renal Denervation in Isolated Systolic Hypertension

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2017
BackgroundRenal sympathetic denervation seems to be less effective as a treatment for hypertension in patients with isolated systolic hypertension, a condition associated with elevated central arterial stiffness.

Global distributions of age- and sex-related arterial stiffness: systematic review and meta-analysis of 167 studies with 509,743 participants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Background: Arterial stiffening is central to the vascular ageing process and a powerful predictor and cause of diverse vascular pathologies and mortality.

Estimated pulse wave velocity as a measure of vascular aging

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2023
Background Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), the referent measure of aortic stiffness, is an established measure of vascular aging. In studies where cfPWV cannot be measured, alternative methods are needed to help promote research on vascular ...
