Modern design of pump-turbines

2009 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference (EPEC), 2009
The increasing interests in the market and the challenging hydraulic requirements call for new developments in the field of pump-turbines. For the Tongbai project ANDRITZ HYDRO has developed a new pump-turbine, applying the modern numerical tools of flow simulation for optimization of all components.

Computational Study of Pump Turbine: Partial Load Operations

Volume 3: Computational Fluid Dynamics; Micro and Nano Fluid Dynamics, 2020
Abstract The performance of a pump-turbine under partial flow rates, 85%, 75%, and 65%, is studied using the LES model. The power signal, velocity, vorticity, and pressure field is presented over the blades and throughout the draft tube. Pressure fluctuations are probed at various locations over the wall of the draft tube.

Optimization of Pump Turbines

Journal of the Energy Division, 1981
For the purpose of optimizing pump turbines installed in pumped storage plants with regard to efficiency, cavitation, and excavation costs, a method of computation has been devised which includes a new system of determining type number and impeller outside diameter. An example employing data applicable to a modern pump turbine—Rodund 2(Austria)—reveals

The pump-turbine story

Electrical Engineering, 1958
Commonly used in Europe, pump—turbines are finding increased use as a source of economical power in the United States. Among their numerous advantages is their applicability in many locations not suitable for conventional hydraulic turbines.

Simulation of Flow Through Pump-Turbine

1996
For years Francis — type reversible pump — turbines have been applied to many pumped storage power plants over the world. So far, they have been used under peak shaving generating operation with AFC (automatic frequency control) function during daytime, and plain pumping — energy consuming — operation at night time. Recently, an adjustable speed pump —

Pump-Turbine Development for Geomechanical Pumped Storage Facility

Volume 6: Education; Electric Power; Energy Storage; Fans and Blowers, 2023
Abstract A significant effort is focused on developing cost-effective long-duration energy storage for integrating and expanding the use of renewable energy resources. Geo-mechanical pumped Storage (GPS) leverages the natural energy storage capability of subsurface formations to store water under pressure.

Parametric analysis of pump-turbine sites

2009 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference (EPEC), 2009
Although no new pump-turbine developments have been built on the North American continent since the Rocky Mountain 850MW facility was commissioned in 1995 (1), there is a renewed interest in their development, driven by the need to firm up energy derived from wind, run-of-river small hydro and coal developments as at North Eden, where a 700MW facility ...

Numerical Optimization of High Head Pump-Turbines

1996
In order to cope with the technical challenges of high head pump-turbines, new methods like simultaneous engineering and numerical studies are required. In this paper the application of simultaneous engineering is shown with an example, as well as typical pump-turbine concepts and design features.
