Linear Plasmids in Micrococcus: Insights Into a Common Ancestor and Transfer by Conjugation. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol
Comparative analysis indicates a common ancestor for linear plasmids in Micrococcus strains from Andean Puna, suggesting that horizontal gene transfer helps native microbes survive extreme conditions. The successful transfer of pLMA1 by conjugation also shows its potential as a genetic vector.

Understanding climate change impacts on biome and plant distributions in the Andes: Challenges and opportunities. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Biogeogr, 2022
Abstract Aim Climate change is expected to impact mountain biodiversity by shifting species ranges and the biomes they shape. The extent and regional variation in these impacts are still poorly understood, particularly in the highly biodiverse Andes. Regional syntheses of climate change impacts on vegetation are pivotal to identify and guide research ...

Cenozoic Exhumation and Deformation of the Intermontane Pastos Chicos Basin in the Southern Central Andes: Implications for the Tectonic Evolution of the Andean Plateau (Puna) and the Eastern Cordillera Between 23° and 24°S, NW Argentina

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 42, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
Abstract The Andean Plateau of north‐western Argentina (Puna) at a mean elevation of ca. 4.2 km constitutes the southern continuation of the Altiplano; it is a compressional basin‐and‐range province comprising fault‐bounded, high‐elevation mountain ranges and largely internally drained basins with often thick sedimentary and volcaniclastic fill ...

Multifunctionality and diversity of livestock grazing systems for sustainable food systems throughout the world: Are there learning opportunities for Europe?

open access: yesGrass and Forage Science, Volume 77, Issue 4, Page 282-294, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Throughout the world, livestock grazing systems (LGS) include, and provide livelihoods for, many rural populations. These LGS are represented in a wide variety of agroecological contexts and offer a huge variety of system organization. They contribute to sustainable food systems by providing multiple products including low‐cost edible proteins

Microstratigraphy and palaeoenvironmental implications of a Late Quaternary high‐altitude lacustrine record in the subtropical Andes

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 69, Issue 6, Page 2585-2614, October 2022., 2022
Abstract High‐mountain lake records in semiarid foreland settings, such as the central Andes of North‐western Argentina, are highly restricted and often deprived of well‐preserved microstratigraphic information to analyze palaeoenvironmental changes and their causes, particularly for periods prior to the Last Glacial Maximum.

Constraining Andean Propagation of Exhumation at the Limit of the Eastern Cordillera, NW Argentina, Using Low‐Temperature Thermochronology in a Structural Context

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 41, Issue 8, August 2022., 2022
Abstract Within the Central Andes of NW Argentina, the spatiotemporal distribution and style of deformation is strongly influenced by pre‐Cenozoic heterogeneities, mostly related to the Salta rift extension in the Cretaceous. At the enigmatic junction of the thin‐skinned Subandean belt and the thick‐skinned Santa Barbara System, the Tilcara Range and ...

Climatic signals in lacustrine deposits of the Upper Yacoraite Formation, Western Argentina: Evidence from clay minerals, analcime, dolomite and fibrous calcite

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 67, Issue 5, Page 2282-2309, August 2020., 2020
Abstract Authigenic clays are an important control on reservoir quality in lacustrine carbonates but remain challenging to predict. Lacustrine depositional systems respond to climatic variations in rainfall, surface runoff and groundwater input, and evaporation, and result in rapid and frequent changes in lake volume; this is expressed through changing
