Aspartate Decarboxylase is Required for a Normal Pupa Pigmentation Pattern in the Silkworm, Bombyx mori

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2015
The pigmentation pattern of Lepidoptera varies greatly in different development stages. To date, the effects of key genes in the melanin metabolism pathway on larval and adult body color are distinct, yet the effects on pupal pigmentation remains unclear.

Estimating the efficacy and plume reach of semiochemical‐baited traps on the capture of Trogoderma granarium everts

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
"Simulated warehouse": In this study, we take the step of testing existing and modified trap designs for Trogoderma after the release of T. granarium exclusively. This work will serve to evaluate trap efficacy, while providing a template for further attractant–kill research. The most effective trap was dome trap.

Aggregative oviposition varies with density in processionary moths—Implications for insect outbreak propensity

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 48, Issue 1, Page 102-111, February 2023., 2023
In gregarious insects, groups commonly originate from females laying eggs in masses and feeding groups are established as soon as larvae hatch. Here we show that aggregative oviposition increases with population density at oviposition, and possibly be an important factor in outbreak dynamics of phytophagous insects.

Alternative Protein Sources: Addressing Global Food Security and Environmental Sustainability

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The projected global population increase to 8.60 billion by 2050 and 11.20 billion by 2100 underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions to secure essential food resources, particularly protein, for human health. Traditional animal‐based proteins, while nutritionally rich, are environmentally costly due to greenhouse gas emissions ...

Los estados inmaduros de Coelosis biloba (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae: Dynastinae) y notas sobre su biología Immature stages of Coelosis biloba (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae: Dynastinae) with notes on their biology

Theoretical Levels of Control as a Function of Mean Temperature and Spray Efficacy in the Aerial Spraying of Tsetse Fly [PDF]

open access: yesActa Tropica, 117: 171-182, 2011, 2009
The hypothetical impact of aerial spraying on tsetse fly populations is investigated. Spray cycles are scheduled at intervals two days short of the first interlarval period and halted once the last of the female flies that originated from pre-spray-deposited pupae have been sprayed twice.

Threshold Response to Stochasticity in Morphogenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
During development of biological organisms, multiple complex structures are formed. In many instances, these structures need to exhibit a high degree of order to be functional, although many of their constituents are intrinsically stochastic. Hence, it has been suggested that biological robustness ultimately must rely on complex gene regulatory ...

The Effect of the Electrical Stimulation on the Termination of the Pupal Diapause in the Giant Silkworm, Samia cynthia pryeri Butler [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
The effect of the electrical stimulation on the termination of the diapause of the pupa was investigated in a giant silkmoth, Samia cynthia pryeri (Philosamia cynthia cynthia).

Can Butterflies Evade Fire? Pupa Location and Heat Tolerance in Fire Prone Habitats of Florida

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Butterflies such as the atala hairstreak, Eumaeus atala Poey, and the frosted elfin, Callophrys irus Godart, are restricted to frequently disturbed habitats where their larval host plants occur.
