Tactile responses in pure-tone audiometry: a saccule function? [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, 2013
As generally accepted, low-frequency bone-conduction thresholds obtained in the 35–55 dB range are often tactile responses and not due to auditory stimulation [4]. Since it is recently known that low-frequency airand bone-conducted stimuli can be used to test otolithic function also in humans [2], we wondered if such ‘‘false-positive’’ boneconduction ...

Predictors of Early and Long‐Term Sound Quality Ratings in Adult Cochlear Implant Recipients

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This longitudinal study of 339 adult cochlear implant recipients demonstrates that subjective sound quality ratings improve significantly during the first 6 months post‐activation before plateauing, with early outcomes predicted by electrode placement factors (closer modiolar distance and deeper insertion depth), pre‐operative sound quality, and word ...

Auditory and cognitive performance in elderly musicians and nonmusicians [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Musicians represent a model for examining brain and behavioral plasticity in terms of cognitive and auditory profile, but few studies have investigated whether elderly musicians have better auditory and cognitive abilities than nonmusicians.

NAD+ Enhanced on Hearing Recovery in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This 2‐year, single‐center, double‐blind study with a small sample size compared NAD+ and control groups in a randomized controlled trial for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Results showed that NAD+ led to better hearing improvement from 7 days to 3 months and a shorter average recovery time compared to the control group.

Examination of Hearing in a Rheumatoid Arthritis Population: Role of Extended-High-Frequency Audiometry in the Diagnosis of Subclinical Involvement

open access: yesScientifica, 2016
Objective. The aim of this study is to analyze the high-frequency hearing levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and to determine the relationship between hearing loss, disease duration, and immunological parameters. Materials and Methods.

Amplitude variation in calibrated audiometer systems in Clinical Simulations

open access: yesNoise and Health, 2014
Manual pure tone audiometry is considered to be the gold standard for the assessment of hearing thresholds and has been in consistent use for a long period of time.

Factors Affecting Audiometric and Speech Perception Outcomes in Hybrid Cochlear Implant Recipients

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Hybrid L24 cochlear implant recipients maintained functionally aidable low‐frequency hearing through 5 years at a rate of 73%, with significant improvements in speech perception in quiet and noise, and EAS users showing superior speech scores compared to electric‐only users.
