Energy integration describes sound-intensity coding in an insect auditory system [PDF]
We investigate the transduction of sound stimuli into neural responses and focus on locust auditory receptor cells. As in other mechanosensory model systems, these neurons integrate acoustic inputs over a fairly broad frequency range.

Microstructure of the pure-tone threshold [PDF]
A painstaking determination of pure-tone threshold versus frequency in normal ears using a headphone reveals a remarkably consistent microstructure of hills and valleys. A large number of determinations of the frequency at the peak of each of the threshold hills reveals a standard deviation of less than 10 Hz for stimulus frequencies from 200 to 5000 ...

Subcutaneous implantation of murine Panc02 pancreatic cancer cells depleted of sST2, a soluble decoy receptor for the proinflammatory interleukin‐33 (IL‐33), leads to a decreased number of GLUT4‐positive cancer‐associated adipocytes, reduced levels of the anti‐inflammatory molecule adiponectin, increased phosphorylation of IκBα, elevated Cxcl3 ...

Spectral and temporal gating mechanisms enhance the clutter rejection in the echolocating bat, Rhinolophus rouxi [PDF]
Doppler shift compensation behaviour in horseshoe bats, Rhinolophus rouxi, was used to test the interference of pure tones and narrow band noise with compensation performance.

Aircraft noise synthesis system: Version 4 user instructions [PDF]
A modified version of the Aircraft Noise Synthesis System with improved directivity and tonal content modeling has been developed. The synthesis system is used to provide test stimuli for studies of community annoyance to aircraft flyover noise.

Here, we introduced an intermittent electrical stimulation protocol mimicking the episodic nature of real‐life exercise in vitro by alternating low‐ and high‐frequency stimulation. In comparison with widely used continuous stimulation, it enhanced the rate of glucose and fatty acid oxidation, but not the myokine release.

Acoustic performance of inlet multiple-pure-tone suppressors installed on NASA quiet engine C [PDF]
The length of multiple-pure-tone (MPT) treatment required to reasonably suppress the MPT's produced by a supersonic tip speed fan was defined. Other suppression, broadband, and blade passing frequency, which might be accomplished were also determined ...

Why do bell plates ring? [PDF]
Bell plates are polygonal plates which, when held in the hand and struck with a beater, produce an initial transient followed by a sustained, pure tone. The presence of the sustained tone depends sensitively on the shape.

Modulation of auditory responses by modality-specific attention in rat primary auditory cortex [PDF]
How does attention modulate sensory representations? In order to probe the underlying neural mechanisms, we established a simple rodent model of modality-specific attention.
