Shell-Boring Mechanism of the Gastropod,Purpura (Thaïs) lapillus: a Physiological Demonstration of the Role of Carbonic Anhydrase in the Dissolution of CaCO3 [PDF]

open access: bronzeAmerican Zoologist, 1969
Measurement of carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity in homogenates of accessory boring organs of the muricid gastropod, Purpura lapillus , by Meldrum and Roughton's manometric method showed that CA is always present in boring as well as in inactive ABOs, but in variable amounts.

GROWTH AND SHELL VARIATION IN THE TROPICAL EASTERN PACIFIC INTERTIDAL GASTROPOD GENUSPURPURA:ECOLOGICAL AND EVOLUTIONARY IMPLICATIONS

open access: greenThe Biological Bulletin, 1983
In this study we investigate variation in shell morphology among Purpura pansa Gould, 1853and P. columellaris Lamarck, 1822; high intertidal predatory gastropods found in the eastern tropical Pacific. Field observations on the high frequency of shells intermediate in apertural characteristics, the occurrence of cross-copulations between distinct morph ...

Investigating the Upper Holocene palaeoenvironment and human subsistence strategy in the Khor Rori coastal area by studying mollusc remains from the Inqitat plateau (Dhofar, Sultanate of Oman)

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 39, Issue 4, Page 608-625, May 2024.
ABSTRACT Archaeological shells have a great potential for reconstructing past environments and human–environment interactions. The Inqitat plateau (Khor Rori Archaeological Park, Oman) shows rich mollusc assemblages, present in the HAS1 settlement and in a shell midden nearby (Iron Age).
