Puumala virus and two genetic variants of tula virus are present in Austrian rodents
Journal of Medical Virology, 1997Puumala and Tula viruses are hantaviruses found in Europe and are associated with the rodents Clethrionomys glareolus and Microtus arvalis, respectively. Puumala virus is associated with the human disease nephropathia epidemica. In Austria, ten clinically diagnosed cases of nephropathia epidemica, presumably caused by Puumala virus infection, have been

Immune responses to Puumala virus infection and the pathogenesis of nephropathia epidemica
Microbes and Infection, 2004Puumala virus, causative agent of a mild form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, also known as nephropathia epidemica, induces long-lasting humoral and cellular immunity in patients. The virus itself is not cytopathic, and the immune responses to the virus may be involved in teh pathogenesis of the disease.

Genetic analysis of Puumala viruses in Croatia
2004Puumala virus (PUUV), causative agent of the mild/moderate type of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) belongs to the Hantavirus genus in the Bunyaviridae family. HFRS is an endemic disease in Croatia. PUUV was shown to be dominant pathogen during the last HFRS outbreak in Croatia in 2002.

HFRS outbreak and Puumala virus in Croatia in 2002
2005Puumala virus (PUUV), causative agent of the mild type of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) belongs to the Hantavirus genus in the Bunyaviridae family. HFRS is an endemic disease throughout Croatia. The incidence of HFRS varies in a cyclic fashion, with peaks occurring every couple of years, coinciding with peaks in vole populations.
