Monitoring Injected Drug Use in Greece Through Syringe Residue Analysis: A Multicity Study Within the ESCAPE Network

open access: yesDrug Testing and Analysis, Volume 18, Issue 11, Page 1407-1417, November 2026.
A total of 2121 used syringes were analyzed in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patras between 2022 and 2024. Distinct drug‐use patterns were observed across the three cities. Benzodiazepines, pregabalin, methadone, and fentanyl were increasingly detected in 2024.

Infectious diseases, comorbidities and outcomes in hospitalized people who inject drugs (PWID)

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2022
Injection drug use poses a public health challenge. Clinical experience indicates that people who inject drugs (PWID) are hospitalized frequently for infectious diseases, but little is known about outcomes when admitted. Charts were identified from local hospitals between 2013–2018 using consultation lists and hospital record searches.

Prevalence of Hepatitis C Infection and Treatment Initiation Following Dried Blood Spot Testing in New South Wales, Australia

open access: yesLiver International, Volume 46, Issue 11, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims To achieve hepatitis C (HCV) elimination by 2030, testing and treatment must reach people most at risk. Dried blood spot (DBS) testing offers an alternative to venepuncture, suitable for community and prison settings. This study evaluated HCV infection prevalence and treatment initiation among people receiving DBS testing ...

Angle‐dependent X‐ray absorption correction in small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering: accounting for constrained scattering volume, beam profiles and capillary wall attenuation

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, Volume 59, Issue 5, Page 1374-1383, October 2026.
We present an improved numerical angle‐dependent absorption correction procedure for line‐collimated small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering measurements in thin‐walled quartz capillaries. The procedure accounts for the constrained illuminated volume, measured primary beam profiles and capillary‐wall absorption, enabling physically consistent data ...

Usability and acceptability of oral-based HCV self-testing among key populations: a mixed-methods evaluation in Tbilisi, Georgia

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2022
Background Hepatitis C virus self-testing (HCVST) is an additional approach that may expand access to HCV testing. We conducted a mixed-methods cross-sectional observational study to assess the usability and acceptability of HCVST among people who inject

HIV detection by an emergency department HIV screening program during a regional outbreak among people who inject drugs.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
ObjectiveMultiple HIV outbreaks among persons who inject drugs (PWID) have occurred in the US since 2015. Emergency departments (EDs), recognized as essential venues for HIV screening, may play a unique role in identifying undiagnosed HIV among PWID, who
