Contact Force Estimation of Continuum Robots without Embedded Sensors: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2026.
This review surveys methods for estimating contact forces in continuum robots without embedded sensors. It explains why contact force matters, classifies force patterns, and groups existing methods into three approaches based on actuation, deformation, and environment information.

Development of a Linear Stirling System Model with Varying Heat Inputs [PDF]

open access: yes
The linear model of the Stirling system developed by NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has been extended to include a user-specified heat input. Previously developed linear models were limited to the Stirling convertor and electrical load.

Review of Memristors for In‐Memory Computing and Spiking Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2026.
Memristors uniquely enable energy‐efficient, brain‐inspired computing by acting as both memory and synaptic elements. This review highlights their physical mechanisms, integration in crossbar arrays, and role in spiking neural networks. Key challenges, including variability, relaxation, and stochastic switching, are discussed, alongside emerging ...

Bio‐to‐Robot Transfer of Fish Sensorimotor Dynamics via Interpretable Model

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2026.
This study demonstrates how a biologically interpretable model trained on real‐fish muscle activity can accurately predict the motion of a robotic fish. By linking real‐fish sensorimotor dynamics with robotic fish, the work offers a transparent, data‐efficient framework for transferring biological intelligence to bioinspired robotic systems.

Brain volume trajectories in young children are associated with polygenic scores for late‐onset Alzheimer's disease risk

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract INTRODUCTION Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) capture an individual's genetic susceptibility to AD. Although thoroughly studied in older populations, there exists a notable gap in comprehensively exploring the association of AD PRS with early brain development.

Enhancing Q‐Learning via State‐Space Design for Active Battery Balancing

open access: yesBattery Energy, Volume 5, Issue 2, March 2026.
This study investigates the profound impact of state definition on the efficacy of Q‐learning for active battery balancing in lithium‐ion battery packs. We define and evaluate three distinct state representations—[State 1, 11‐state space definition], [State 2, 27‐state space definition], and [State 3, 81‐state space definition]—within a reinforcement ...

High‐Fidelity Simulation‐Driven Control Framework for Robust Grid Integration of Renewable Energy Systems

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 3, Page 1286-1299, March 2026.
This work proposes a high‐fidelity, simulation‐driven control framework for robust grid integration of hybrid PV–wind systems using a modular, hierarchical multi‐loop architecture with adaptive decision logic. The framework coordinates power, DC‐link voltage, and grid currents under fast load and generation changes, enabling safe exploration of extreme

Off‐Grid Solar Systems: An Experimental Work and Systematic Techno‐Economic Analysis

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 3, Page 1300-1321, March 2026.
In the study mentioned above, experimental monitoring and economic evaluation of two off‐grid PV systems were conducted using a low‐cost data logger. The results suggest that basic DC systems are economically feasible compared to grid power, but that AC systems require further cost‐cutting to achieve financial viability.
