Integrated miRNA–mRNA Analysis Reveals Obesity‐Driven Regulatory Networks in Human Visceral Adipose Tissue With and Without Type 2 Diabetes

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims Obesity is characterised by pathological alterations in visceral white adipose tissue (vWAT) that may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). While microRNAs (miRNAs) are key post‐transcriptional regulators, comprehensive human vWAT profiling across metabolic states remains limited.

Particle image velocimetry studies of bubble growth and detachment by high speed photography [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
An understanding of bubble flows is important in the design of process equipment, particularly in the chemical and power industries. In vapour-liquid processes the mass and heat transfer between the phases is dominated by the liquid-vapour interface and ...

Cultivating Compassion in Students for End‐Of‐Life Processes: A Mixed‐Methods Participatory Research Protocol

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Nursing, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims To analyse the impact of a participatory process of awareness and reflection on compassion, in the face of end‐of‐life processes, in students aged 12–23 years in six Spanish regions, and to understand how the participatory process can transform their compassion. Design Mixed sequential transformative methodology with different phases.

Pu-breeding feasibility in PWR [PDF]

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Design, 2007
This study addresses the issue of alternative pathways for breeding plutonium in a 900 MWe three loop thermal pressurized water reactor (PWR), either fueled with uranium fuel (3.5% U-235) or with mixed fuel (20% MOX). During the operation of a nuclear reactor the in-core neutron flux and the ex-core neutron flux are monitored with flux detectors.

Estimation of Genetic Variance and Breeding Values for Infectious Disease Susceptibility From Simulated Longitudinal Data Using Generalized Linear Mixed Models Based on Transmission Dynamics

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Recent theoretical work shows that the potential of genetic selection to reduce the prevalence of infectious diseases is much larger than expected from classical quantitative genetic theory, due to indirect genetic effects that arise in the transmission process. However, to fully benefit from these indirect effects, we need to estimate genetic

Efficiency Upgrade in PWRs

open access: yesEnergy and Power Engineering, 2011
Most of the light water reactor power plants now operating or under construction use pressurized-water reactor (PWR). They are suffering of relatively low thermal efficiency which is around 33%. This would not only have a negative impact economically but also incurs environmental burden in terms of thermal pollution. In this paper, nuclear steam supply

Is Gender‐Inclusive Language Left‐Wing? The Social Meaning of Four Gender‐Inclusive Strategies in French and German

open access: yesJournal of Sociolinguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Despite evidence that gender‐inclusive language represents genders more equally than generic masculines, it still faces resistance, possibly due to its perceived association with left‐wing politics. This study explores the social meaning of gender‐inclusive language compared with generic masculines in French and German, using four gender ...

Association of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Metabolic Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesObesity Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background The association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) across life course and its components (abdominal obesity, elevated blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia) is poorly understood. Methods Three databases were screened for studies published January 2000–February 2024 that examined the ...

How Educational Leaders Think About Intersections of Identities and Disciplinary Learning in Science

open access: yesSchool Science and Mathematics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT American science education leaders play critical roles in promoting equity in education, but little is known about how they understand everyday classroom interactions where inequities related to intersectionality are evident. This study examines science leaders' sensemaking about a scenario depicting the experiences of a group of American ...
