A current assessment of liver abscesses should allow for better understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease and improve the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment. Amebic liver abscess occurs more commonly than pyogenic liver abscess on a worldwide basis. However, in the United States, pyogenic liver abscess predominates.

AbstractExperience with 34 patients with pyogenic liver abscess is reviewed to evaluate the impact of percutaneous drainage and duration of antibiotic therapy on results of treatment. Patients with shock, adult respiratory distress syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation, jaundice, severe hypoalbuminemia, and diabetes had a poor prognosis ...

Pyogenic liver abscess is a classic clinical entity whose presentation and management have evolved significantly with the advent of potent antimicrobials and the availability of improved diagnostic imaging. The classic triad of fever, upper right quadrant pain or fullness, and jaundice resulting from advanced pylephlebitis is now seldom seen.

Current Treatment Options in Gastroenterology, 2002
Pyogenic liver abscess is an important and often life-threatening disorder. It is commonly caused by underlying disease of the biliary system, but more frequently, no predisposing disorder can be identified. Its diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion and imaging of the liver.

The percutaneous approach-specifically, ultrasound-guided percutaneous catheter drainage-associated with intravenous administration of antibiotics is the therapy of choice in patients with single or multiple pyogenic liver abscesses. The initial empiric antibiotic therapy should be modified based on results of blood and pus cultures.

Historically, open surgical drainage has been the treatment of choice for pyogenic liver abscess. The records of 54 patients with pyogenic liver abscess were reviewed to determine whether earlier diagnosis with current imaging tests and definitive treatment with antibiotics, aspiration, or catheter drainage was an effective alternative to open drainage.

Pediatric Pyogenic Liver Abscess
Pediatric Emergency Care, 2009Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a rare pediatric disease. Typically, PLA is found in adults with biliary disease. There are no typical physical findings or symptoms. Often, pathogenic organisms are not recovered for identification. This case illustrates a teenager presenting with prolonged episodes of fever and vomiting.

Abstract Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is an uncommon but potentially lethal disease affecting humans worldwide. Despite the improvement in diagnostic imaging techniques and therapeutic modalities, the case fatality rate of PLA in patients with an underlying malignancy is high.

Pyogenic solitary liver abscess
The American Journal of Surgery, 1953Abstract A case of solitary liver abscess is described and the difficulty of early diagnosis is stressed. The findings on which such a diagnosis could be suggested are indicated and the differential diagnosis discussed.
