A Novel Gelatin Hydrogel‐Based Drug‐Delivery System Promotes Antimicrobial Efficacy in a Pyogenic Spondylodiscitis Rat Model

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Spondylodiscitis/spondylitis is an intractable disease requiring long‐term intravenous antibiotics administration. However, drug delivery is greatly restricted because of the avascular nature in the intervertebral disc, which not only delays recovery but increases antimicrobial resistance and osteomyelitis. The purpose of this study

Bilateral Brucellar Sacroiliitis Mimicking Tuberculous or Inflammatory Spondyloarthropathy: A Case Report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection, endemic in rural areas. It is caused by Brucella species, which are transmitted through the intake of unpasteurized dairy products and contact with infected animals. Sacroiliac joint involvement is common in brucellosis and typically presents as unilateral sacroiliitis. Contrarily, bilateral sacroiliitis is

Pathologic Basis of Pyogenic, Nonpyogenic, and Other Spondylitis and Discitis

open access: yes, 2015
Pyogenic spondylitis and discitis are usually seen following a recent infection or surgery. Aseptic embolus causes an infarcted area within the bone. Pyogenic spondylitis is characterized by edema, vascular leakage, and supportive inflammatory reaction ...

Application of Ultrasonic Osteotome in Segmental Resection and Removal of Cage During Revision Surgery for Intervertebral Disc Space Infection After Lumbar Fusion

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 18, Issue 6, Page 1216-1222, June 2026.
The ultrasonic osteotome‐based segmental excision method has the advantages of shorter and controllable operation time, lower blood loss, higher success rate of removal, and lower risk of nerve damage, making it uniquely valuable in the revision surgery for IVDS infection after lumbar fusion.

From Culture to Sequencing: Evolving Strategies for the Diagnosis of Pediatric Spondylodiscitis

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, Volume 18, Issue 4, Page 607-618, April 2026.
Diagnostic approaches to pediatric spondylodiscitis have evolved from culture‐based methods with limited sensitivity to advanced molecular and sequencing technologies. Metagenomic next‐generation sequencing (mNGS) enables rapid, culture‐independent pathogen identification, improving diagnostic accuracy, guiding therapy, and reducing invasive procedures

Etiologic spectrum and diagnostic gaps of spinal infections: a cross-sectional study in Qingdao, China

open access: yesPreventive Medicine Reports
Objective: Spinal infections drive global morbidity; however, accurate pathogen detection remains poor. We aimed to profile pathogens in local patients with spinal infections and assess pre-referral identification rates for different spinal infections ...

Atypical Presentation of Pediatric Spinal Tuberculosis as Chronic Abdominal Pain: A Case Report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Spinal tuberculosis, also known as Pott's disease, in children is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The nonspecific clinical features, such as chronic abdominal pain, of extrapulmonary TB or spinal TB in children tend to delay diagnosis.

Machine Learning‐Based Prediction of Life‐Threatening Complications During Hemodialysis in Hospitalized Patients With Poor General Conditions

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 50, Issue 1, Page 139-149, January 2026.
A machine learning model using predialysis data predicted sudden events during or after hemodialysis with high accuracy (auROC: 0.889). The key predictors included emergency hospitalization, recent surgery, high heart rate, low albumin levels, and high CRP.
