Sensitivity distribution along the strips of Compensation pyrheliometers [PDF]

open access: yesTellus A: Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 1974
Different sensitivity distribution curves had been found for the sensor of compensation pyrheliometer by laboratory measurement and by calculation. To obtain the real sensitivity distribution a new measuring method was applied, which used the sun as radiation source. The results of laboratory and field measurements were in proper agreement.

Atmospheric extinction coefficients in the $\mathrm{I_c}$ band for several major international observatories: Results from the BiSON telescopes, 1984 to 2016 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Over 30 years of solar data have been acquired by the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON), an international network of telescopes used to study oscillations of the Sun. Five of the six BiSON telescopes are located at major observatories.

Where numerical weather prediction meets large‐eddy simulations in a convective boundary layer during the FESSTVaL field experiment

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, Volume 152, Issue 774, January 2026 Part A.
We exploit the Field Experiment on Sub‐mesoscale Spatio‐Temporal Variability in Lindenberg (FESSTVaL) to compare the performance of an NWP model at sub‐km resolutions with a traditional LES model. Focusing on clear‐sky ABL turbulence (June 14), shallow convective clouds and surface radiation (June 27), and deep convective cold pools (June 29), we find ...

Enhancing Intra‐Hour Solar Irradiance Forecasting for Solar Applications: A Blended Model of Satellite, Sky Imager, and Persistence

open access: yesSolar RRL, Volume 9, Issue 24, December 2025.
This paper presents a hybrid forecasting system for intra‐hour solar irradiance, blending an All‐Sky Imager (ASI) model with satellite and persistence forecasts. It demonstrates substantial performance improvements over standalone satellite predictions, particularly under dynamic sky conditions and highlights the ASI model's generalization capabilities

Scorch marks from the sky [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Daily sunshine duration is commonly reported at weather stations. Beyond the basic duration report, more information is available from scorched cards of Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorders, such as the estimation of direct-beam solar irradiance.
