Personality traits across ontogeny in firebugs, Pyrrhocoris apterus
Animal Behaviour, 2012Consistent behavioural differences have long been recognized in animals but it still remains unclear how these traits change over ontogeny. As individuals can face different situations over their lives, and their life history expectation may not be the same in different life stages, one can expect that using different strategies in different life ...

Personality and ectoparasitic mites (Hemipteroseius adleri) in firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus)
Behavioural Processes, 2016Individuals of the same species often consistently differ in their behaviour across time and context. These stable differences are usually termed 'animal personality'. Parasitism is known to significantly influence the evolution of animal personality at least in part because more explorative individuals may meet parasites more frequently than less ...

Cytophotometry of DNA and histone in meiosis of Pyrrhocoris apterus
Experimental Cell Research, 1970Abstract Using double wavelength cytophotometry, the amount of DNA (Feulgen reaction) and histone (staining with fast-green at pH 8.1–8.2) in the cell nuclei of the bug Pyrrhocoris apterus were estimated at the early stages of spermatogenesis. The evidences obtained that the DNA amount per nucleus is doubled in the premeiotic interphase, while the ...

Effect of thermoperiod on diapause intensity in Pyrrhocoris apterus (Heteroptera Pyrrhocoridae)
Journal of Insect Physiology, 2001The intensity of adult diapause in Pyrrhocoris apterus was measured in two series of experiments as the duration of pre-oviposition period at a constant temperature of 25 degrees C after transfer from short (12L:12D) to long day conditions (18L:6D). Higher diapause intensity was induced with a thermoperiod than at constant temperatures.

Nervous inhibition of corpora allata by photoperiod in Pyrrhocoris apterus
Nature, 1976PHOTOPERIOD governs reproduction in many insect species with adult diapause. The nervous and neuroendocrine systems mediate the impact of the environment on ovarian functions. It has been suggested that the daylengths promoting diapause prevent secretion of the activation hormone (most probably a complex of neurohormones) from the pars intercerebralis (

Behavioral regulation of developmental cycle in Pyrrhocoris apterus L. (Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoridae)
Oecologia, 1976During the warm season the larvae of Pyrrhocoris apterus select in their natural habitats places with temperatures which do not exceed 24°C on average even at the hours of maximum sunshine. At the same time other places of their habitats have temperatures up to 50°C. This active behavioral selection of the microclimate regulates the speed of P. apterus
