QCD, supersymmetric QCD, lattice QCD and string theory: Synthesis on the horizon? [PDF]

open access: yesNuclear Physics B - Proceedings Supplements, 1999
Supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions have taught us many important physics lessons. These can both inform and be informed by future work on the lattice. I focus on three issues: the properties of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and its relation to the non-supersymmetric case; the properties of gauge theories with matter and their relation ...

Hierarchical Twist: Chirality Across Scales in Cellulose Cholesterics

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 14, Issue 4, 27 January 2026.
Hierarchical left‐ and right‐handed chiral nematic structures are observed in a solvent‐free thermotropic cellulose derivative. Free‐standing films show hierarchical twisted structures whose pitches respond differently to uniaxial strain: left‐handed pitches increase, ones decrease.

Decay-protected superconducting qubit with fast control enabled by integrated on-chip filters

open access: yesCommunications Physics
Achieving fast gates and long coherence times for superconducting qubits presents challenges, typically requiring either a stronger coupling of the drive line or an excessively strong microwave signal to the qubit.

Accelerated stabilization of coherent photon states

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2018
Control and utilization of coherent states of microwave photons is a ubiquitous requirement for the present and near-future implementations of solid-state quantum computers.

Heavy holographic QCD [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2020
Abstract We study the phase structure of the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model in the plane of temperature and baryon chemical potential, including the effect of a nonzero current quark mass. Our study is performed in the decompactified limit of the model, which, at least regarding the chiral phase transition, appears to be closer to ...

Quantum GraviElectro Dynamics

open access: yesAnnalen der Physik, Volume 538, Issue 1, January 2026.
The BRST invariant Lagrangian of the gravitationally interacting U(1)$U(1)$ gauge theory, namely the Quantum GraviElectro Dynamics (QGED). The Yan–Mills theory with the Hilbert–Einstein gravitational Lagrangian, namely the Yang–Mills–Utiyama (YMU) theory, is defined and quantised using the standard procedure. The theory is perturbatively renormalisable,

Electron counting in a silicon single-electron pump

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
We report electron counting experiments in a silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor quantum dot architecture which has been previously demonstrated to generate a quantized current in excess of 80 pA with uncertainty below 30 parts per million.

A workflow for practical training in plant genomics using Oxford Nanopore long‐read sequencing

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 1, Page 185-197, January 2026.
Advances in DNA sequencing technologies are revolutionising all areas of plant genomic research. In response to the current deficit of educational resources in modern plant genomic methods, we have developed a comprehensive genomics training course for sequencing and analysing non‐model plant species.

Three-dimensional skyrmions in spin-2 Bose–Einstein condensates

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2018
We introduce topologically stable three-dimensional skyrmions in the cyclic and biaxial nematic phases of a spin-2 Bose–Einstein condensate. These skyrmions exhibit exceptionally high mapping degrees resulting from the versatile symmetries of the ...
