Aliskiren-Induced QT Interval Prolongation
Southern Medical Journal, 2009Aliskiren gained FDA approval for the treatment of hypertension in 2007. It is the first approved pharmaceutical to manage hypertension by direct renin inhibition. With the introduction of novel drugs and mechanisms of action comes the challenge of monitoring for new unreported adverse events.

Prolonged QT Syndrome: Perioperative Management
Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 1993Intraoperative cardiac arrhythmias related to prolonged QT syndrome are uncommon. We describe a 26-year-old woman in whom ventricular fibrillation occurred during the final minutes of a partial glossectomy and right supraomohyoid selective neck dissection and discuss the role that this specific operation may have had in the development of the ...

A prolonged QT interval can be caused by medications, electrolyte abnormalities, or long QT syndrome, a genetic mutation that prolongs the action potential. Torsades de pointes is a potentially fatal polymorphic VT most often associated with prolonged QT interval. This article focuses on recognizing and treating drug-induced torsades de pointes.

Arrhythmogenic mechanisms of QT prolonging drugs: Is QT prolongation really the problem?
Journal of Electrocardiology, 2004Torsade de Pointes (TdP) is an atypical ventricular arrhythmias associated with the acquired and congenital forms of the long QT syndrome. The substrate for the arrhythmia develops as a consequence of the amplification of electrical heterogeneities intrinsic to the ventricular myocardium.
