Vector potential and stored energy of a quadrupole magnet array [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 1999 Particle Accelerator Conference (Cat. No.99CH36366), 1999
The vector potential, magnetic field and stored energy of a quadrupole magnet array are derived. Each magnet within the array is a current sheet with a current density proportional to the azimuthal angle 2/spl theta/ and the longitudinal periodicity (2m-1)/spl pi//L. Individual quadrupoles within the array are oriented in a way that maximizes the field

Analytic Understanding of the Resonant Nature of Kozai–Lidov Cycles with a Precessing Quadrupole Potential

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
Abstract The very long-term evolution of the hierarchical restricted three-body problem with a slightly aligned precessing quadrupole potential is studied analytically. This problem describes the evolution of a star and a planet that are perturbed either by a (circular and not too inclined) binary star system or by one other star and a ...

Quasithermalization of collisionless particles in quadrupole potentials [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review A, 2020
We analyze several puzzling features of a recent experiment with a noninteracting gas of atoms in a quadrupole trap. After an initial momentum kick, the system reaches a stationary, quasi-thermal state even without collisions, due to the dephasing of individual particle trajectories.

Gas flow in barred potentials – III. Effects of varying the quadrupole [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2015
We run hydrodynamical simulations of a 2D isothermal non self-gravitating inviscid gas flowing in a rigidly rotating externally imposed potential formed by only two components: a monopole and a quadrupole. We explore systematically the effects of varying the quadrupole while keeping fixed the monopole and discuss the consequences for the interpretation

Chaos in periodically perturbed monopole + quadrupole-like potentials

open access: yesPhysics Letters A, 1998
The motion of a particle that suffers the influence of simple inner (outer) periodic perturbations when it evolves around a center of attraction modeled by an inverse square law plus a quadrupole-like term is studied. The equations of motion are used to reduce the Melnikov method to the study of simple graphics.
