Abstract A crucial distinction we have tried to draw has been between ‘indices’, signals that are reliable because they cannot be faked, and ‘handicaps’, signals that are reliable because they are costly to produce. The distinction is clear enough in a model, and there are examples that fall easily into one or other category.
