Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

Unlocking the potential of tumor‐derived DNA in urine for cancer detection: methodological challenges and opportunities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urine is a rich source of biomarkers for cancer detection. Tumor‐derived material is released into the bloodstream and transported to the urine. Urine can easily be collected from individuals, allowing non‐invasive cancer detection. This review discusses the rationale behind urine‐based cancer detection and its potential for cancer diagnostics ...

Is the patient activation measure associated with adherence to colonoscopy after a positive fecal occult blood test result?

open access: yesIsrael Journal of Health Policy Research, 2018
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, but these can be reduced significantly with population screening using annual fecal occult blood tests (FOBT)A positive FOBT requires timely follow-up with ...

Legitimization of Data Quality Practices in Health Management Information Systems Using DHIS2. Case of Malawi [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Medical doctors consider data quality management a secondary priority when delivering health care. Medical practitioners find data quality management practices intrusive to their operations. Using Health Management Information System (HMIS) that uses DHIS2 platform, our qualitative case study establishes that isomorphism leads to legitimization of data

Quality of health care: informatics foundations [PDF]

open access: yesYearbook of Medical Informatics, 2003
Abstract:In this article we will discuss in what ways computer systems can contribute to the quality of healthcare and on which principles of informatics successful systems are founded. Section 2 presents an overview of studies that investigate the usefulness of decision support, and Section 3 discusses factors that determine the success of decision ...

Clinical applications of next‐generation sequencing‐based ctDNA analyses in breast cancer: defining treatment targets and dynamic changes during disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) offers a possibility for different applications in early and late stage breast cancer management. In early breast cancer tumor informed approaches are increasingly used for detecting molecular residual disease (MRD) and early recurrence. In advanced stage, ctDNA provides a possibility for monitoring disease progression and

Limitations of the incidence density ratio as approximation of the hazard ratio

open access: yesTrials, 2019
Background Incidence density ratios (IDRs) are frequently used to account for varying follow-up times when comparing the risks of adverse events in two treatment groups.

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Health Information Standardisation as a basis for Learning Health Systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Standardisation of healthcare has been the focus of hospital management and clinicians since the 1990's. Electronic health records were already intended to provide clinicians with real-time access to clinical knowledge and care plans while also recording and storing vast amounts of patient data.

Quality of care and health status in Ukraine [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Health Services Research, 2014
We conducted a national level assessment of the quality of clinical care practice in the Ukrainian healthcare system for two important causes of death and chronic disease conditions. We tested two hypotheses: a) quality of care is predicted by physician and facility characteristics and b) health status is predicted by quality of care.During 2009-2010 ...
