"Information is physical and any processing of information is always performed by physical means," an innocent-sounding statement, but its consequences are profound. When quantum effects become important, for example, at the level of single atoms and photons, the classical theory of computation becomes fundamentally inadequate.

The THz drive of the Mott insulating state of a rare‐earth nickelate induces instantaneous insulator‐metal transition via quantum tunneling of valence electrons across the bandgap. This transition is pure electronic and highly non‐thermal, which may find its applications in ultrafast opto‐electronics with enhanced performance and minimal device size ...

A quantum spin-probe molecular microscope
Single spin defects can allow high-resolution sensing of molecules under an applied magnetic field. Here, the authors propose a protocol for three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging with angstrom-level resolution exploiting the dipolar field of a ...

We describe how physics of computation determines computational complexity. In particular we show how quantum phenomena lead to qualitatively new modes of computation. An ideal quantum computer would allow to face certain tasks out of reach of classical computers, the factorization problem being the most striking example.

Metal‐tetracene dimeric complexes are synthesized through the pyridyl coordination to either Pt(II) or Pd(II). Photophysical properties are systematically compared as a function of the metal using steady‐state and time‐resolved spectroscopy. The Pt(II) dimer exhibits efficient intramolecular singlet fission and subsequent intramolecular up‐conversion ...

Reliable quantum computers [PDF]
The new field of quantum error correction has developed spectacularly since its origin less than two years ago. Encoded quantum information can be protected from errors that arise due to uncontrolled interactions with the environment. Recovery from errors can work effectively even if occasional mistakes occur during the recovery procedure. Furthermore,

This study uncovers a new switching mechanism in HfO2 and ZrO2, where the absence of a non‐polar layer along the a‐direction induces interaction between polar layers. Consequently, the switching barriers for growth are lower than those for nucleation in this direction, leading to a size‐dependent coercive field that matches experimental observations ...

The long-range transmission of quantum information relies on multiple interfaces between photons, acting as flying qubits, and localized memories, serving as repeaters, to mitigate transmission losses.
