scanning tunneling microscopy

Catalysis from A to Z, 2020
The invention of the scanning tunneling microscope was a singularity event in the field of surface science and condensed matter physics. The ability to visualize individual atoms in an atomic structure was a huge step forward in experimental development,

Quantum tunneling, dissipation, and fluctuations

Physical Review Letters, 1986
A theory of quantum tunneling with dissipation is constructed. The frequency-dependent transmission coefficient is calculated at zero and finite temperatures. A fluctuation-dissipation theorem for tunneling particles is derived.

Realism and quantum flux tunneling

Physical Review Letters, 1987
Leggett and Garg have argued that the phenomenon of quantum flux tunneling oscillations will, according to the predictions of quantum mechanics, contradict the pair of assumptions ``macroscopic realism'' and ``noninvasive measurability.'' It is argued here that there can be no contradiction of realism in such a case, and that the contradiction is ...

Quantum uncertainty effect in tunneling

Physical Review Letters, 1991
It is shown that electron tunneling from a very narrow tip should be effected, in an essential manner, by the quantum uncertainty in its transverse momentum induced by the confinement in the tip. This effect produces a strong asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristics of the tunnel junction, and to other unusual consequences.

Mesoscopic quantum tunneling of the magnetization

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 1995
Abstract Magnetic relaxation plateaux observed at low temperature in complex systems, are generally attributed to Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization (QTM). If the experiments are not performed down to low enough temperatures, alternative interpretations can be given in terms of powerlaw distributions resulting from either switching field ...

Quantum tunneling in dissipative systems

Physical Review A, 1993
As a prelude to a discussion of tunneling in the presence of dissipation, we discuss the damped harmonic oscillator. We show that for a harmonic-oscillator potential, the Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian can be reduced to a sum of independent harmonic-oscillator Hamiltonians by a normal-mode transformation.

Quantum Tunneling

2017
Abstract Quantum tunneling, wherein a quanject has a non-zero probability of tunneling into and then exiting a barrier of finite width and height, is the subject of Chapter 13. The description for the one-dimensional case is extended to the barrier being inverted, which forms an attractive potential well.

Quantum tunneling
