Potential Biomarkers for Disease Stratification and Prognosis Prediction in Pediatric Asthma: LCN2, sST2 and FGF21

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pediatric asthma is a common chronic airway inflammatory disease, where accurate assessment of disease severity and prognosis prediction is crucial for treatment decisions. Currently, there is a lack of precise and effective biomarkers.

STAR highlights on heavy ion physics

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2015
RHIC-STAR is a mid-rapidity collider experiment for studying high energy nuclear collisions. The main physics goals of STAR experiment are 1) studying the properties of the strongly coupled Quark Gluon Plasma 2) explore the QCD phase diagram structure ...

Cooling of a New Born Compact Star with QCD Phase Transition

open access: yes, 2004
We study the cooling behaviour of an isolated strange quark star, using an equation of state derived from perturbative QCD up to second order in strong coupling constant, and we compare it with that of a neutron star.

Plate tectonics in the microscopy realm: Molecular insights into morphological variability of Peridinium willei (Peridiniales, Dinophyceae)

open access: yesTAXON, EarlyView.
Abstract Freshwater Peridinium willei (Peridiniaceae) is globally distributed, but reports linking its morphologies with DNA sequence data remain scarce. The taxonomy of the species, and its infraspecific taxa, remain ambiguous due to the lack of DNA sequence data for the original and type material.

Phase Structure of Compact Star in Modified Quark-Meson Coupling Model

open access: yes, 2007
The K$^-$ condensation and quark deconfinement phase transitions are investigated in the modified quark-meson coupling model. It is shown that K$^-$ condensation is suppressed because of the quark deconfinement when $B^{1/4}$1.68M$_{\odot}$ is confirmed,

PROPERTIES OF MAGNETIZED QUARK-HYBRID STARS [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Modern Physics E, 2011
The structure of a magnetized quark-hybrid stars (QHS) is modeled using a standard relativistic mean-field equation of state (EoS) for the description of hadronic matter. For quark matter we consider a bag model EoS which is modified perturbatively to account for the presence of a uniform magnetic field.

Record phenological responses to climate change in three sympatric penguin species

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This paper is impressive because we managed to monitor extensively a really difficult place to reach and operate in. We deployed 77 cameras across Antarctica and the Sub Antarctic islands to monitor three different species of penguins. We found that they are the fastest advancing vertebrates with respect to their timing of breeding.

Prospects of Detecting Baryon and Quark Superfluidity from Cooling Neutron Stars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Baryon and quark superfluidity in the cooling of neutron stars are investigated. Observations could constrain combinations of the neutron or Lambda-hyperon pairing gaps and the star's mass.

Holographic Quark Matter and Neutron Stars [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2016
We use a top-down holographic model for strongly interacting quark matter to study the properties of neutron stars. When the corresponding Equation of State (EoS) is matched with state-of-the-art results for dense nuclear matter, we consistently observe a first order phase transition at densities between two and seven times the nuclear saturation ...

Peri‐operative rehabilitation in patients undergoing elective cardiac valve surgery: a randomised controlled trial

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Patients with valvular heart disease are at high risk of postoperative pulmonary complications, which contribute to morbidity and mortality. However, few studies have focused specifically on peri‐operative rehabilitation in this patient population.
