Coins that Change Their Weights [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
As in many coin puzzles, we have several identical-looking coins, with one of them fake and the rest real. The real coins weigh the same. Our fake coin is special in that it can change its weight. The coin can pretend to be a real coin, a fake coin that is lighter than a real one, and a fake coin that is heavier than a real one.

The impacts of e‐cigarette flavours: An overview of systematic reviews

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.

Variations of a Coin-Removal Problem [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2004
Given a set of coins arranged in a line, we remove heads-up coins one at a time and flip any adjacent coins after each removal. The coin-removal problem is to determine for which arrangements of coins it is possible to remove all of the coins. In this paper we consider a variation of the problem in which gaps created by removing coins are eliminated by

Cost–benefit analysis and ‘next best’ methods to evaluate the efficiency of social policies: As in pitching horseshoes, closeness matters

open access: yesAnnals of Public and Cooperative Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Many policymakers are unwilling, or think that it is infeasible, to perform comprehensive cost–benefit analysis (CBA) of programmes in social policy arenas. What principles actually underlie CBA? An understanding is necessary to assess whether other evaluation methods are close enough to CBA to provide useful information on social efficiency ...

Integrating Sr isotopes, microchemistry, and genetics to reconstruct Salmonidae species and life history

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent approaches to fisheries research emphasize the importance of the coproduction of knowledge in building resilient and culturally mindful fisheries management frameworks. Despite widespread recognition of the need for Indigenous knowledge and historical reference points as baseline data, archaeological data are rarely included in ...

Optimal non-adaptive solutions for the counterfeit coin problem [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
We give optimal solutions to all versions of the popular counterfeit coin problem obtained by varying whether (i) we know if the counterfeit coin is heavier or lighter than the genuine ones, (ii) we know if the counterfeit coin exists, (iii) we have access to additional genuine coins, and (iv) we need to determine if the counterfeit coin is heavier or ...
