Periodic paralysis in Quarter Horses: a sodium channel mutation disseminated by selective breeding
Nature Genetics, 1992We recently reported on a linkage study within a Quarter Horse lineage segregating hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), an autosomal dominant condition showing potassium-induced attacks of skeletal muscle paralysis. HYPP co-segregated with the equine adult skeletal muscle sodium channel alpha subunit gene, the same gene that causes human HYPP.

SummaryThe pedigree origin of a base pair substitution in the horse muscle sodium channel gene that confers susceptibility to the muscle disease hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP) was investigated with a set of 978 Quarter Horses. The horses were chosen at random, based on a collection of blood samples taken between 1989 and 1991 to meet parentage ...

High Directivity Quarter-Wave Microstrip Couplers with Periodic Floating-Conductors on Coupled Edges
2006 European Microwave Conference, 2006This paper presents a new quarter-wavelength microstrip coupler with high directivity, which consists of a periodic sequence of floating metal strips in the slots on the inner edges. After describing the characteristics of the coupled-line, a 15-dB coupler is designed and a high directivity of 30 dB or more in theory is obtained over a considerably ...

Degradation in wavelength accuracy and single-mode stability, incurred by random fluctuation of grating period, has been studied by an effective-index transfer matrix method in quarter wavelength shifted distributed-feedback lasers. The laser facets are assumed to be perfectly antireflection coated, and the period fluctuation is modeled as a Gaussian ...

Observations and light curve solutions of three W UMa stars with periods of a quarter of a day
New Astronomy, 2018Abstract Multicolor photometric observations of the W UMa binaries CSS J015638.9+224640, CSS J073801.1+303139 and ROTSE1 J135749.66+361609.3 with periods of around 6 h are presented. The light curve solutions revealed that the components of each target are almost equal in temperature and are of G and K spectral types.

Dynamic Instability in Quartering Seas—Part III: Nonlinear Effects on Periodic Motions
Journal of Ship Research, 1997The loss of stability of the horizontal-plane periodic motion of a steered ship in waves is investigated. In earlier reports we referred to the possibility of a broaching mechanism that will be intrinsic to the periodic mode, whereby there will exist no need for the ship to go through the surf-riding stage.

Outside the inner quarters: sociability, mobility and narration in early Edo-period women's diaries
Japan Forum, 2010Abstract This paper moves between text and context in order to trace the personal, familial and narrative connections between two women, Nakayama Suzuko (b. c. 1675), wife of a Mito domain official stationed in Edo, and her sister-in-law Kuroda Tosako (1682–1758), wife of an official of Tatebayashi domain.
