The use of quartz tuning forks for biosensor applications is investigated. The basis of the sensor is to coat the tuning fork surfaces with specific biomolecules and measure subsequent mass loading from the selective binding of complementary analytes. Two experimental set-ups are evaluated, direct mechanical excitation and self-excitation.

Use of a quartz tuning fork for precise measurements of density has been studied in normal 3He liquid and in 4He liquid and vapor, spanning a reasonably wide range of fluid densities. It is evident that the compressibility of the fluid must be accounted for in order to properly interpret the resonator response.

Quartz tuning fork based microwave impedance microscopy
Review of Scientific Instruments, 2016Microwave impedance microscopy (MIM), a near-field microwave scanning probe technique, has become a powerful tool to characterize local electrical responses in solid state samples. We present the design of a new type of MIM sensor based on quartz tuning fork and electrochemically etched thin metal wires. Due to a higher aspect ratio tip and integration

A high sensitivity quartz tuning fork temperature sensor
2009 4th IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems, 2009In this paper, a highly sensitive temperature sensor based on quartz tuning fork resonators is reported. The temperature sensor is configured by ZY (110°/10°) Cut quartz crystal wafer based bulk acoustic wave (BAW) tuning fork resonators whose operating frequency is at 31 KHz.

Effective stiffness of qPlus sensor and quartz tuning fork
Ultramicroscopy, 2014Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) have been extensively employed in scanning probe microscopy. For quantitative measurement of the interaction in nanoscale using QTF as a force sensor, we first measured the effective stiffness of qPlus sensors as well as QTFs and then compared the results with the cantilever beam theory that has been widely used to estimate ...
